July Athlete of the Month - Maureen Hassett

7/2/2026

Maureen's fitness journey is a wonderful reminder that the greatest rewards of strength training often happen outside the gym.

While she's proud of the measurable changes, losing 20 pounds, improving her body composition, and building strength, what excites her most is how those changes have transformed the way she lives. Whether she's skiing challenging trails, picking up her grandsons with ease, gardening, or tackling projects around the house, Maureen is enjoying the freedom that comes from moving well and feeling strong.

From the beginning, Maureen's goal wasn't simply to exercise, it was to stay active, capable, and independent for the long haul.

Since joining Wilcox more than three years ago, she's seen incredible changes. She's improved her strength, reduced body fat, increased her water intake, and built the confidence to ski trails she once wouldn't have attempted.

Perhaps one of her favorite victories happens every time she picks up her grandsons.

When her oldest grandson, Aiden, was just six months old, lifting him was difficult because of weakness and severe swelling in her feet and ankles. Today, she effortlessly scoops up both Aiden and his one-year-old brother, Jack who she affectionately describes as "a bruiser" using the squat strength she's developed through consistent training.

Those everyday moments mean everything.

Even after three years of remarkable progress, Maureen knows there's always room to grow.

She's continuing to focus on rolling out consistently to help prevent injury, using her stack throughout the day, and moving with intention so every exercise creates the connection she's looking for.

For Maureen, it's not about simply completing an exercise, it's about doing it well.

One of Maureen's greatest accomplishments is her consistency.

In more than three years of training, she's missed very few sessions outside of illness or vacation. That commitment has allowed her to continually build strength, improve her movement, and deepen her understanding of how her body works.

She now feels muscles she never connected with before, especially her core and lats, and that awareness carries into everyday activities.

Whether she's lifting groceries, working in the garden, tackling projects around the house, or spending time with her grandsons, she's moving with better mechanics and greater confidence.

Outside the gym, she's also noticed incredible improvements in her favorite activities. She skis better than she did years ago, warms up and stretches before hitting the slopes, rides her road bike regularly, and has made walking part of her daily routine.

Her favorite exercises: TRX planks, pull-ups, and squats reflect the strength she's worked so hard to build.

As for least favorites? Wall ball squats and halos still aren't winning any popularity contests!

One of the biggest lessons Maureen has learned is that meaningful results take time.

The rewards don't happen overnight but they're worth every bit of patience.

She also continues to learn the value of slowing down, assessing situations before jumping in, and moving with intention rather than rushing through life.

Her motivation is simple but incredibly meaningful:

She wants to stay physically and mentally independent, continue participating fully in life, and be the kind of grandmother her grandsons will always remember.

She wants to be their MoMo, the grandma who's active, adventurous, and always ready for fun.

She's also inspired by an 83-year-old woman she sees skiing at Sunday River, proving that age doesn't have to define what's possible.

For Maureen, Wilcox has become much more than a place to work out. It's helped her lose 20 pounds, improve her nutrition by eating more protein, and become stronger than she was ten years ago. It's also given her something equally valuable: a community. She enjoys seeing familiar faces each week, learning from coaches who continue to help her refine her movement, and being surrounded by people who share her commitment to healthy aging.

That support has helped make fitness not just something she does but part of who she is. Maureen offers advice that's both practical and encouraging:

Allow your best self to show up. Sometimes that isn't your strongest self. Show up anyway. Say hello to the people around you. Focus on moving well. Don't be afraid to ask a coach for help or the confidence to challenge yourself. Eat the best you can, give yourself grace, and take time to appreciate how far you've come.

As Maureen beautifully reminds us:
"Be grateful for what your body can do."

Maureen, we are so proud to celebrate you as our July Athlete of the Month.

Your consistency, curiosity, and commitment to living an active, adventurous life inspire everyone around you. You remind us that strength isn't just about today's workout—it's about building a body that allows us to enjoy skiing, gardening, grandchildren, and every adventure life has to offer.

Thank you for showing up, working hard, and being such an important part of the Wilcox community.

👏 Let's hear it for Maureen! 💙💪
