For avoiding change and doing scary things. You can thank your brain for protecting your multi-millennia old human ancestors, but you’ve gotta get it in check for the world we exist in today. You see… it’s not your brain’s fault that it’s a chronic liar. It’s just doing what it’s supposed to do – to keep you safe. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite realized that no animal is looking to eat you as its prey on a daily basis. Or that food is no longer in scarcity. So, it keeps doing its job. One that served our ancestors well but not so much the modern human. And it lies to you. A LOT. It tells you that changing is terrifying, life-threatening even. So, you obviously shouldn’t do that. It tells you to live for pleasure – rest, good food, fun, and not to distress yourself with uncomfortable things like exercise. The next time your brain pipes up and makes you feel resistance or fear to something you know you need to do, just remember what’s actually happening. Start seeing yourself almost as a separate entity from your brain. Because your brain truly has its own agenda separate from yours. Crazy, right!? Let me know how this sits with you, my friend. A few months ago, life was normal and now it’s anything but... But the beauty in all of this is that we get to grow through the process. We must learn to navigate new paths and learn how to think differently. Is it disruptive? Yes. Inconvenient? Yes. But look for those opportunities to grow. The reason I am writing this to you today is because I simply want to remind you that this is all temporary. That you are amazingly strong. That you are cared for, and whatever you’re feeling right now is okay to feel. You will get through this. Choose the outcome you want to experience 6 months from now TODAY. Use this time to step into your healthiest, most fit self. To learn new skills, practice great habits, and to manage your mindset and thoughts through difficult times. To build stronger connections with the people in your life, even if you can’t physically be in front of them yet. We have open space to create more good in our lives and the lives of those we care for more than ever. Focus on what you can control and choose the thoughts that serve you, even when it feels hard to do. Because it’s not all bad. There’s opportunity in everything if you seek it. Too often we think that when we achieve a certain goal – making a certain amount of money, achieving a specific weight or size, or even finding a relationship we love – then we will be happy. But the truth is, happiness is a choice and something you create where you are now – not somewhere in the future that’s brought on by an achievement or another person. There’s no need to say to yourself ”WHEN this thing happens, THEN I’ll feel happier.” Because you can CHOOSE it right now. No matter where you are and how tough it might seem. Here are a few ideas on ways to create happiness:
1. Grow yourself – Whether it’s learning new skills, building a new career, reading personal development books, creating new personal practices, etc, there are a million ways to grow yourself. Growth avoids stagnation, which can be a very depressing experience for some people. 2. Give more – This could be giving to charity, giving to a friend in need, or simply leaving a bigger tip for your server at a restaurant. Giving fundamentally makes us feel good! 3. Get into nature – Spending time outside with fresh air, sunshine, and the sounds of the outdoors is 100% good for your soul. You might find yourself seriously inspired if you do this frequently enough! 4. Spend time with loved ones – This can be friends, family, or even your pets. Experiencing love, connection, and laughter is a critical need for all humans. 5. Move your body! Endorphins that make you feel good and happier are a real thing! Humans are designed for movement – not sitting in desk chairs, on couches, and in cars throughout the day before moving to the bed at night. They allow others and outside factors to steer the direction of their lives. To dictate what happens to them, where they go, how they feel, where they end up at the end of their days. The other type is the driver. The driver knows what they want, goes after it, and doesn’t allow anyone else or anything to stand between them and the life they’re going to build, and everyone around them benefits as a result of their commitment. Most people are passengers for a million and one different reasons. Drivers are far more rare. They’re not ever too busy to take care of themselves and ensure their family also has their needs met. They’re focused and determined and seemingly “have it all.” And simultaneously, they experience deep happiness and fulfillment because, as the driver, it’s what they’ve chosen and created. One isn’t better than the other – that’s not what this is about.
But the driver tends to make more out of life. And the beautiful part of all of this is that we get to CHOOSE if we’re the passenger or the driver. It’s never a coincidence, although often we don’t realize the choice. So, my friend… have you been living as the passenger or the driver in your own life? No judgment either way.
