There’s a version of summer you watch, and there’s a version you’re fully in.
One version has you sitting on the dock holding the towels while everyone else jumps in. You’re taking the pictures. Watching the grandkids swim. Waving as everyone heads out in the kayak. Saying, “I’m good right here.” And maybe you are. But maybe there’s also a small part of you that wishes you were in the water too. That’s the part we want to talk about. Because staying active as you age isn’t really about exercise for exercise’s sake. It’s about having a body that lets you participate in your own life. Staying Active as You Age Is About More Than Exercise When people think about fitness, it’s easy to think about numbers. Weight. Clothing size. Reps. Miles. Calories. But those numbers rarely tell the whole story. What if the better measurement was whether you could get in and out of the kayak without worrying about it? What if progress meant walking down the uneven path to the lake confidently? What if getting stronger meant being able to climb into the boat, swim with your grandkids, hike with your family, travel somewhere new, or spend an entire day outside and still have energy left? That’s functional strength. And that’s what we care about at WILCOX. We want the strength you build during training to show up outside the gym. Your Body Is for Living, Not Hiding Summer can bring up complicated feelings about our bodies. Suddenly there are shorts and tank tops and bathing suits. And that tiny little size tag inside your swimsuit can start carrying far more meaning than it deserves. We recently had a conversation with a woman who wanted to start swimming again. It was something she used to love. But one thing was getting in her way. Buying a bathing suit in a size she didn’t want to see. Here’s the thing. You are the only person who needs to know what that tiny tag says. That number doesn’t determine whether you belong in the water. It doesn’t determine whether you deserve to enjoy summer. And it certainly doesn’t determine your worth. Cut the tag out if you need to. Put the bathing suit on. Get in the water. Your body is for living in, not hiding. What Are You Actually Training For? One of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make is to stop asking: “How do I want my body to look?” And start asking: “What do I want my body to be able to do?” Maybe you want to:
Those goals might not fit neatly into a before-and-after photograph. But they change your life. Strength Training for the Life You Want For years, my own reason for training was connected to our kids. I wanted to keep up with them. I wanted to be in the water with them. I wanted to climb, kayak, travel and explore alongside them. I wanted to know my body could respond when they needed me. But our kids are getting older now. They’re more capable. They don’t need me to catch, hold, and carry them in quite the same way. And my “why” has started shifting. Now I think about doing it all over again someday with our grandkids. I want to climb waterfalls with them. I want to travel with them. I want to kayak, hike, swim and explore when they’re eight or twelve years old. I want to be able to say yes. That means I’m not just training for this summer. I’m training for the next 40 years. Healthy Aging Means Building Capability There’s an outdated idea that getting older automatically means doing less. Less adventure. Less movement. Less independence. Less confidence in your body. We don’t believe that has to be the story. Yes, your body changes. You may need to train differently at 55, 65, or 75 than you did at 25. That’s where good coaching matters. Training can be intentional. Movements can be adjusted. Progress can happen at a pace that respects where your body is today. The goal isn’t to prove you can still train like you did decades ago. The goal is to move the way your body was meant to move and build strength that supports the life you have now -and the life you want later. You Don't Have to Sit This One Out Maybe there are things you’ve quietly stopped doing. You don’t get in the kayak anymore. You stay on the dock. You skip the hike. You watch the grandkids play instead of getting down there with them. You’ve adapted so gradually that you barely noticed it happening. That doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance. You’re not behind. You’re starting fresh. You can begin rebuilding strength. You can improve your balance and confidence. You can practice moving well again. And you don’t need to become a completely different person to do it. You just need a place to begin. Movement, Nutrition, and Mindset All Matter At WILCOX, we look at sustainable health through three connected pillars: Movement, Nutrition, and Mindset. Movement builds strength and capability. Nutrition gives your body the support and energy it needs. Mindset helps you stop measuring success against unrealistic expectations and start focusing on the life you actually want. That’s why we believe in Alignment Before Action. Before worrying about doing more, pushing harder, or chasing another goal, get clear about what matters to you. What do you want your body to help you do? Who do you want to be there for? What experiences do you want to keep saying yes to? Start there. Be in Your Summer Maine summers don’t last forever. There are only so many warm lake days. So many boat rides. So many camp weekends. So many evenings when everyone stays outside longer than they planned because nobody wants the day to end. Don’t spend them worrying about whether you missed a workout. And please don’t spend them sitting out because you don’t like the number inside your bathing suit. Get in the water. Take the boat ride. Climb the thing. Play with your grandkids. Stay out late around the fire. This is what we train for. Not to create a body that looks perfect while life happens around it. To create a body that helps you be fully in the life happening right now. Ready to Feel Stronger in Your Life?
