Alyson is so committed and dedicated to improving herself each and every day. She even drives an hour and a half round trip to train with us. Here is what our team is saying about working with Alyson: “Alyson always brings an amazing attitude and an incredible amount of focus and determination to her training sessions.” - Mike “Alyson is an inspiration, she gives it her all, 100% every day. Diane Batty is amazing. Diane started training with us in July. She has made incredible progress building strength, endurance, and balance to do all the things she loves to do in life. In her retirement years, these activities include building schools in Guatemala, travel, and intensely competitive games of pickle ball. 2 weeks ago Diane was playing Pickle Ball and went for net ball in the ‘kitchen’ she broke 2 bones in her wrist. She had surgery to insert a plate and 8 screws in her wrist. Diane embraces a life filled with gratitude and looks for the positive in everything. She is so grateful for the strength and balance that she has built over the past 4 months to be able to accomplish every day tasks with just one arm. Just 2 weeks after breaking her wrist, Diane is back at it – training one on one with Schaeffer to maintain and build strength as her wrist is healing. Diane says, “my main job is to stay healthy. I need to take care of myself so that I can keep up with my daily routine.” Thanks for the inspiration Diane!
The progress that Jerry has made with Katie in just a few short months is incredible. Jerry has Parkinson's disease. Parkinson’s disease affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. Parkinson’s disease symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. After diagnosis, treatments can help relieve symptoms, but there is no cure. By committing to healthy living, Jerry now has more energy, is standing more upright and has drastically improves his balance. A safe and effective exercise program can reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease by increasing muscle strength and endurance, enhancing mobility and reducing your risk of falling. Regular physical activity can also help improve your balance and coordination, and enhance your overall quality of life. The key is to determine what type of exercise is best for you, and to follow a program that accommodates your individual needs and concerns. The goals of our program is to improve Jerry's functional capacity and ability to perform activities of daily living, increase muscle strength and endurance, improve range of motion, and reduce his risk of injury. Great Job Jerry!
Pete Warner is a long time reporter for the Bangor Daily News. He has done an incredible job in our training program and as a result is changing his family tree. "Men in my family have an unfortunate knack for dropping dead in their 50s." Pete Warner says in his BDN article. Pete started training with us in May through our KickStart Program after his regular doctors visit alerted him that his blood pressure was elevated. Pete turned this all around by following our guidelines for healthful living, eating whole foods, and training with us 3 times per week. "Within a couple of weeks, my blood pressure readings returned to the normal range." In addition, Pete increased his energy levels and noticed a dramatic improvement in his mood and self-confidence. The physical results of the 4 Week KickStart Program included: 20½ combined inches lost in his arms, shoulders, chest, waist, hips and thighs. Congratulations Pete!

Tom Harnish has really made the most of his time here. He committed to the Peak Performance system from day one and hasn’t missed completing it since. Day in and day out, Tom is 100% mentally prepared to do his best when he walks through the door. This has allowed him to make the very most out of his personal training sessions with Scott and accomplish the goals he has set for himself. We are proud to know Tom is doing things in his personal life that he was unable to do prior to exercise. It’s truly life changing on a daily basis when you commit yourself to a healthy lifestyle. Way to go Tom! |

From Tom:
"Since starting at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness I have achieved 70 % of my weight loss goal for the year in just 5 months!" | I was at a point in my life where I was tired of being overweight and having no energy. I was physically unable to do the things I had always been capable of in the past. I had tried various programs on my own with little to no success and knew that I needed a more one on one approach to help keep me motivated, stay on track and keep me focused on my goals. Since starting at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness I have achieved 70 % of my weight loss goal for the year in just 5 months! My energy level has increased dramatically having a positive effect in every aspect of my life. Through a lot of positive reinforcement, determination, guidance from Scott and hard work, I have gained strength, endurance and increased flexibility. |

James Jordan is a great example of a few different things. First and foremost, he has the same attitude every time he is here. He is always trying to improve with each session. This means he is always super focused – which leads to results! James also does a great job of utilizing our schedule. He’s a busy guy with work and family. Regardless of his obligations, James has stayed committed to his goals and continues to make exercise and nutrition a priority in his life. Among other traits, these make him an ideal client and someone who is fun to train and we are excited to see his progress. Congrats James. |
From one of James' trainers, Scott Philbrick
- ALWAYS upbeat and positive!
- Engaged and wants to learn why and how, "am I doing this right" or "what and where should I feel this"
- He is a great example of our GPT training sessions - showing that if you commit you can have serious results.
- This is a very busy time of year for him at work and he still finds a way!!! He makes great use of our training schedule. Fitting it in wherever it fits his schedule.
- He works hard every session and doesn't let his limitations limit himself!
From James Jordan:
There is no doubt that with a full time job and an active family life finding the time to workout is difficult. The schedule at Wilcox is flexible enough so the time can be found. If I can't get a GPT 3 at 9:30 in the morning, I can grab a GPT 2 at 4:00 in the afternoon and have just as good of a workout. If I miss my three sessions in the week I will grab a boot camp on Saturday.
I have limited movement with my left elbow and this has never held me back because the trainers coach me through the work out and make the modificaions necessary for me to be successful. In the past, I have never worked out regularly for so long and enjoyed it so much. Each work out offers a great challenge and a huge reward when you’re done and exchanging high fives. I enjoy all the trainers and all the other clients in the groups
The biggest thing I get from working out at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness is the trainers have every workout planned. I do not have to be a fitness expert or judge when to up my weight or reps. All I have to do is listen and follow directions. The groups are small enough so each trainer has the ability to give you the direction and encouragement you need, throughout the entire work out.
Thanks Wilcox Wellness & Fitness for showing me working out can be enjoyable with positive results.
"I feel good. I feel fit. I feel strong. I sleep better.
I am more relaxed and happy. I have more energy."
-Martha
Irwin & Martha are terrific to train. They are always focused, willing to try their best, and have such a great attitude towards exercise and staying healthy. Irwin has even learned how to jump rope - I’m not sure he thought it would be possible! We love having Irwin & Martha as part of our training program because they are the example. |
It has been a pleasure to see Irwin and Martha progress. We have focused so much on perfecting form and really learning how the entire body is important for each exercise they perform. It takes an incredible amount of focus, patience, and discipline to train in this way. Martha & Irwin have earned all of their accomplishments by doing just that. |
The Journey
-from Martha
I have been taking and enjoying group exercise classes for many years including classic aerobics, step aerobics, weight training, combat, stationary bike, yoga…you name a class and I have probably done it. When I heard that Mike had opened his own gym and was offering Boot Camp classes I was intrigued; a class I hadn’t done yet! After e-mailing for more information I was eager to give it a try. It sounded like fun and I wondered if I could move to a higher level of fitness at my age. I also wanted to learn what “functional training” was and what it could do for me. |
I was surprised to learn that I wasn’t working to my potential in my other classes - nobody’s fault, that’s just the way it was. At Wilcox, a warm up before class really warms you up. Breathless after the warm up? Yup. That was different but it made sense once I realized I worked harder, smarter and better after a full warm up that includes stretching, core strength moves and heart pounding aerobic work.
I have committed to three workouts a week. My husband, Irwin and I have one personal training session a week (together) that is tailored just for our needs and goals. We started this partly because we wanted to be extra sure we were doing all of the exercises correctly to get the most out of our workouts and do them safely. We alternate between Boot Camp and Group Personal Training for the other two workouts.
Inspired by the gym’s mission to encourage people to focus on being fit, eating well, and believing in themselves, I not only committed to the gym, I also made a personal goal to improve my eating habits. My goals were: watch portion size, eat more vegetables, healthful and higher protein snacks, no grazing, and wine with dinner on weekends only.
A Better Quality of LifeI am amazed at what I have achieved in two years at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness. I have lost 12 pounds. I have better cardiovascular fitness and I am stronger. How do I know this? Every move I make —- getting up out of a chair, bringing in bags of groceries, walking up a hill, digging up a plant in my garden —- is easier than it was 2 years ago. I feel good. I feel fit. I feel strong. I sleep better. I am more relaxed and happy. I have more energy. |
Training Sessions & The Trainers
I like that every workout is different. I like that we do moves that I haven’t done since I was a kid. That is fun! I like that we work with our own body weight, not equipment like treadmills or bikes. I like the challenge of learning a new exercise and how to do it correctly for the most benefit. I like being pushed to reach my potential. I like that I don’t have to worry about whether I am taking someone’s “spot” on the exercise floor or taking the “wrong” bike that belongs to someone else. I like that the trainers are consistent in how they teach the moves. | "Most of all I like the approach to teaching and coaching and their focus on all of us. They are so encouraging, positive and helpful. I think that is a big reason why everyone appears to enjoy being at Wilcox gym." |
"The atmosphere at Wilcox Wellness promotes being yourself, pushing yourself, and doing it with the trainers cheering you on. In January 2015 I faced some health issues and went on a strict eating regime to prevent kidney stones. In the last year I have gone down three plus pant sizes, lost almost 60 pounds and have more energy than ever. My experience at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness has been life changing." |
From Wilcox Wellness & Fitness:
From Traci's Trainer:
Every trainer would LOVE to have a 100% success rate with their clientele. But sadly, that is probably asking the impossible. As I look back, I am quite proud of the success we have had with Traci. She has met her goals - and then some! She has blown way past what I expected she could physically achieve.
Not only is Traci a great client, she is a great friend. It's not always about the quick fix weight loss. It's a process and she loves the process. She has inspired others around her and even myself to be a better trainer.
I am very proud to be a part of Traci's journey and there is not a doubt in my mind that she will continue to excel. - Katie Norwood
From Traci On Her Experience:
I started training with Katie in May 2014. Soon I started to see changes in my weight and how my clothes fit. I got hooked.
Wilcox Wellness is not your “typical” gym. I like that Katie changes it up every time I come for an appointment. No mirrors, no clocks, no weight machines. I have great chemistry with Katie. She pushes me beyond my limits.
