Katrina Lajoie
Not long after Katrina Lajoie joined Wilcox Wellness & Fitness, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought through it, was in remission, and then it came back metastasizing to her leg, and broke it… while she was running a half marathon… that she FINISHED. Katrina’s mindset is UNBREAKABLE.

Meet Pete Warner, one of our incredible clients in our Bangor location! Before joining our training program he was leading a sedentary lifestyle, struggling with motivation and self-discipline. Katherine Collins
When Katherine joined our training program, about 4 years ago she had already been running consistently and competitively for 12 years. And… her words - her legs were really strong but her core and upper body were pretty weak, and she came to us to improve that. Since she’s been training with us consistently, she is faster, stronger, and her form is a lot better. You would never know it by looking at Katherine, but she has arthritis in her back that was causing pain and threatening her ability to continue to do the things she loves to do, like running. Dawn Cowan
Dawn says this training program is her medication that she takes to stay physically strong as she ages, medication to feel less anxious and less stressed, and medication that makes her feel confident. And… it should be mentioned at 57 years old - this ‘training medication’ is the only medication she takes. She trains to be able to keep up with ‘beautiful chaotic’ life. Robin Sweeney
In 2004, Robin Sweeney was diagnosed with a desmoid tumor, which was underneath her scapula and spiraled down into her rib cage. She went through chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. They removed muscle and tendon and even a couple of ribs. Her range of motion on her left side was completely gone. Robin started training with us via our KickStart Program in early 2020. In her words… “The last three years my life has changed 175%. I have tons of energy, I feel fit, I feel healthy, I feel grounded.” When Robin first stated - she couldn’t do one push up, she couldn’t do a burpee, and she couldn’t jump rope. Look at her now! She looks like a completely different person. It is so incredible how much progress you can make when you commit to consistent effort. And… it is so much more than that. “Yes you can - you can do anything you want.” He said, “well, I want to run the Boston marathon.” Just out of nowhere - that thought came to him. He ran for a bit, joined a local track club but never got close to qualifying for Boston. Then he heard about the WILCOX training program. Not only did he qualify and run Boston, he qualified and ran it twice. He also ran the New York marathon and did a half IronMan last year. (He humbly says it was a triathlon - it was an IM 70.3) But, more than that… he is more fit, clearer, and sharper. Matt Enman
Sometimes it takes an injury to get yourself committed to proper training. When Matt Enman started training with Mike, he could hardly walk. He had suffered a groin injury that was debilitating, impacting all of his normal daily activities. They started training real slow, building up proper mobility in key areas, then adding dynamic movements once he fully recovered. Matt has learned how to use his body to enhance his life and it is no longer something that holds him back from the activities he loves most (he is one of the best disc golfers in the region despite this set back) as well as reducing the daily pain he once had. Lella Daniel
Lella started training with us towards the end of 2017 after a hip replacement surgery when she was having trouble doing some of the basic things of life like bending forward to put on her socks. I remember talking with her and her being nervous to get started because she wasn’t sure of what she would be able to do it. It is AMAZING to me to look at her now. We are all so incredibly proud of her. She shows up early, she puts in the work, and she has completely changed her life for the better. And in her words, “I am a new me. Don has been an absolute champion the last few months. Katrina Lajoie
We are so very excited to share Katrina’s story with you today. Katrina is such an inspiration not only in the gym but in all other aspects of life! She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 - no family history, 42 years old, very active marathon runner, and super consistent client in our training program. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy and quickly returned to normal life and from there she didn’t think about breast cancer too much. In August of 2021 she started having hip pain. She never related the pain to cancer, she thought maybe she was over training for a an upcoming marathon. She ran a half marathon in October relatively pain free then another in November but this time in agony. Mind you - she is the strongest person I know - she still finished. She thought I had a torn muscle. After a couple of weeks hobbling around with crutches, she finally saw her PCP and got X-rays and an MRI… She says she will never forget hearing the news that her cancer had spread to her pelvis and her femur was broken. She says she nearly fell to the floor in utter shock, pain and disbelief. Fast forward to today, she underwent surgery to place a titanium rod in the femur to stabilize it, she had 10 rounds of radiation, a couple months of PT, and started taking medication to deplete the cancer’s food source. Determined not to let this horrible disease take over, she began training again for another half marathon! (number 16!) Katrina is the most brave, strongest, most positive person we know. She keeps her focus on the things she can control - like eating well, exercising, and surrounding herself with positive people. Her motto is you need to be flexible, if you don’t bend, you’ll break. Mo Snow

How has your overall experience been with our training program?
"The KickStart Program has been a real eye-opener for me. Even though I had a lot of doubts about my ability to stick to the meal plan and follow through on attending the scheduled workouts, I have been building momentum with each passing day. It has been a life-changing experience.

However, I have noticed that clothes are fitting more loosely and that I am almost up to a second tighter notch on my belt."

"From the outset, I have been most impressed with the impact of the meal plan. It is difficult to get into the habit of doing all the shopping and having to plan so specifically for meals throughout the day, but the way you feel after getting into the plan is well worth the inconvenience. Following the plan has empowered me to realize that I can make healthy decisions about food without sacrificing the enjoyment of eating delicious meals. "

"To be honest, the training sessions have been difficult. I have been overweight and out of shape for so long, that I still have many months of work to do before I'm going to be anywhere near peak strength and flexibility. The sessions are great because they enable everyone to work out at their own pace. You can push yourself as hard as you want, or take it easy when necessary, without sacrificing results. I find that when I go a couple of days without a session, I am itching to get back to work."
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about joining our training program?
"If you are on the fence about joining the program - I would say jump over that fence and get started on being the healthier, happier person that you want to be. This is a no-brainer for anyone who just wants to feel and look better, regardless if you're five pounds overweight or 55. There is no way anyone who follows the meal plan and gives an honest effort in the training sessions is not going to see noticeable results -- and it happens within a very short time. Just do it. You'll be glad you did!"

The progress that Jerry has made with Katie in just a few short months is incredible. Jerry has Parkinson's disease. Parkinson’s disease affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. Parkinson’s disease symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. After diagnosis, treatments can help relieve symptoms, but there is no cure. By committing to healthy living, Jerry now has more energy, is standing more upright and has drastically improves his balance. |

Hi Mike, It wasn't until my alarm went off this morning that I realized that today is July 1st...my one year anniversary attending Wilcox Wellness and Fitness! I'm not a person who remembers dates or celebrates anniversaries (I have to look up my own wedding date, much to the annoyance of my husband) but I remember June 30th of 2014 because I could palpably feel that change was coming. I remember bits of my first workout. I remember doing the running drills and thinking, oh no, I can't run. Why do they have to do running here? (I still think this some days, but I'm getting over it. ) You poked your head into the line going around and said, "Hi, I'm Mike." I introduced myself and you said "Welcome". I completed that first workout and even though I was probably a mess and definitely couldn't finish everything, I felt strong! More than that I thought, how strong will I be if I do this all the time, consistently? |
Consistency has been an issue for me. I love fitness but have never stuck with it consistently for more than a few months at a time. What has changed this time is I WANT to come every day. It is not a chore. It's been an amazing mental transformation. I needed a fitness community and you have created an amazing one.
Physically, I feel so much stronger than I did a year ago. I've tended to focus on the wrong things in the past, such as my weight or appearance, but this year, even when those habits of thought tried to tell me to focus on "losing weight", I instead concentrated on how much less anxious I am, how my lower back doesn't ache anymore...ever, and the awesome feeling of painful sneezes reminding me that I got an amazing core workout in the day before. Even though my focus has been on how I feel, without trying to lose weight, I have had physical changes this past year that are better than a number on a scale. I'm learning to not be obsessed with the scale, but with my body and it's ability to function.
All this to say THANK YOU! Seriously, you are great at what you do! Katie is so positive and has been helpful and seriously motivating to me. Scott seems to have an extra sense for detecting when I'm not giving it my all and handing me a heavier weight. Jon, he scares me with his giddiness for torturing us, but he's great and his workouts are always unique and effective.

After starting and stopping several programs and plans, over many years. I found a program that, helped me get my nutrition and focus right. However, even with those two important pieces of the puzzle, I knew that something was missing, and that missing piece was fitness. I had no problem sticking to healthy “clean” eating, but had no idea where to start when it came the fitness piece.
I had been an overweight inactive child, and this followed me, all the way through life. I had tried gym membership before, and I felt like a fish out of water. I knew, I needed someone to help guide me, into a new and healthy lifestyle. I was motivated and ready! I search through online listing and found Wilcox’s and decided to stop in…but I chickened out! I decided to make a phone call…but you guessed it…I chickened out again. So I sent an email, and soon received a phone call from Mike. A day or so later, I met with Jon, and decided to give Wilcox’s Wellness and Fitness a try, a decision, I am so glad, I made! |
I have seen some great results on the scale. Having lost close to 90lbs since adopting a “clean nutritional plan” and beginning training with Jon. I have also seen some great results that can’t be measured on the scale. I have a major boast in confidence, improved posture, and an overall better attitude. I can do more with my son, and occasionally beat him in a race.

I needed someone to help me take my fitness to another level. I had been going to the gym and running – but I wasn’t pushing myself. I was not feeling as fit and healthy as I wanted to be. Plus, I was getting ready to run a half marathon for the second time. The first time – I completed it – but it was a real struggle and my recovery time was too long. I wanted to run it again – two years later and run it better and stronger and recover faster. Thanks to Wilcox – I did it!
I just ran may 5th half marathon in April and I felt so strong! My recovery time was so much faster than the first time! My doctor recently commented on my level of fitness, “you have a runners heart – you are really fit” – that’s the BEST part – my body is strong inside and out! I also feel “happier” and have much more energy! Oh and – I’ve had to replace all the clothes in my wardrobe with a smaller size! |
I’ve had the opportunity to work with all the trainers starting with Mike. I recommend Wilcox to others because of the individual attention you receive. I like the fact that the trainers make sure you are being safe and careful – that you are using proper form and technique. They also work you hard to push you beyond your comfort level and before you know it – you are doing, pushing and lifting way more than you ever thought possible. AND they make it fun!!! I also appreciate the variety and flexibility of the training and boot camps – my schedule is such that it’s really tough to commit to the same time every week! This way – I can find time to get in there and get ‘er done!

My trainer Scott Philbrick: Scott is more than a trainer, he is my friend. I know he will never let me hurt myself, nor will he let me “whimp out”. My first workout with him, I was on the floor, after doing the shortest plank in the history of the world. Out of breath, I thought I would take a quick rest on my hands and knees. Scott told me to “stand up, be proud of yourself, you did it!” That stuck with me. If he thinks I can do it, then I should know I can do it too. He doesn’t let me give up, and has helped me believe in myself again. To hold my head up high because I tried.”

I have been taking and enjoying group exercise classes for many years including classic aerobics, step aerobics, weight training, combat, stationary bike, yoga…you name a class and I have probably done it. When I heard that Mike had opened his own gym and was offering Boot Camp classes I was intrigued; a class I hadn’t done yet! After e-mailing for more information I was eager to give it a try. It sounded like fun and I wondered if I could move to a higher level of fitness at my age. I also wanted to learn what “functional training” was and what it could do me. |
I started at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness just shy of my 60th birthday. I was in good health and fairly fit (I bike, cross country ski and walk recreationally in addition to exercise classes). I quickly discovered that Mike’s Peak Performance System is different from the other classes I have taken. Each member is given individual attention. We are taught, in great detail, how to do each move and even how to breathe correctly.
We are asked to commit to a workout schedule. We are asked to work really hard and challenge ourselves, but never beyond our ability. Safety is a major focus.
I was surprised to learn that I wasn’t working to my potential in my other classes - nobody’s fault, that’s just the way it was. At Wilcox, a warm up before class really warms you up. Breathless after the warm up? Yup. That was different but it made sense once I realized I worked harder, smarter and better after a full warm up that includes stretching, core strength moves and heart pounding aerobic work.
I have committed to three workouts a week. My husband and I have one personal training session a week (together) that is tailored just for our needs and goals. We started this partly because we wanted to be extra sure we were doing all of the exercises correctly to get the most out of our workouts and do them safely. We alternate between Boot Camp and Group Personal Training for the other two workouts.
Inspired by the gym’s mission to encourage people to focus on being fit, eating well, and believing in themselves, I not only committed to the gym, I also made a personal goal to improve my eating habits. My goals were: watch portion size, eat more vegetables, healthful and higher protein snacks, no grazing, and wine with dinner on weekends only.
I am amazed at what I have achieved in two years at Wilcox gym. I have lost 12 pounds. I have better cardiovascular fitness and I am stronger. How do I know this? Every move I make —- getting up out of a chair, bringing in bags of groceries, walking up a hill, digging up a plant in my garden —- is easier than it was 2 years ago. I feel good. I feel fit. I feel strong. I sleep better. I am more relaxed and happy. I have more energy.
Here is a simple example of how functional training makes a difference and examples of the exercises we do that contribute to the higher function level. During a recent trip, I was getting on the Concord Trailway bus. I had a fairly heavy back pack slung over one shoulder. Time to board. I gave the driver my ticket and skipped up the 4 steps onto the bus. I didn’t think anything about that until I sat down and watched other people, most younger than me, grab the handrail and slowly pull themselves up the steps with effort. I realized that had been me two years ago. All of the intense endurance training (e.g. sled push) had given me the heart/lung power, strength training (e.g. squat ball tosses) had given me the leg strength, and core work (e.g. side planks) had given me the balance to dance up those steps without a second thought and without getting out of breath.
An added bonus is that my higher level of fitness makes biking easier and, thus, more fun. My husband and I are doing a two week bike trip in Europe later this summer and I now feel confident that I will enjoy the challenge and not be completely exhausted every evening.
I like that every workout is different. I like that we do moves that I haven’t done since I was a kid. That is fun! I like that we work with our own body weight, not equipment like treadmills or bikes. I like the challenge of learning a new exercise and how to do it correctly for the most benefit. I like being pushed to reach my potential. I like that I don’t have to worry about whether I am taking someone’s “spot” on the exercise floor or taking the “wrong” bike that belongs to someone else (you know what I’m talking about ladies). I like that the trainers are consistent in how they teach the moves.
Most of all I like Mike, Katie, Jon and Scott’s approach to teaching and coaching and their focus on all of us. They are so encouraging, positive and helpful. I think that is a big reason why everyone appears to enjoy being at Wilcox gym.

I had lost 50 pounds by changing my eating habits and thought I needed to start an exercise program because of getting older and osteoporosis runs in my family. I wanted to become healthier, stronger, and avoid health issues in the future. I was so scared to try something new...I recruited my daughter, her boyfriend and my son to join me at boot camp-I love it! For the first time in my life, I liked to exercise!
I have participated in two 5K races, obstacle courses and a mud race. I couldn't do one push-up when I started at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness in November 2013. Now I can do many from my toes. I'm stronger, healthier, have gained muscle and lost more weight and inches. The trainers are motivating and push you to do things you never thought you could do! In January 2014 I lost my mom to Alzheimer's disease. Carbohydrate laden snacks became my go to comfort food. After receiving some unsettling blood work results, I knew it was time to make some changes in my life if I wanted to stay healthy. Dealing with diabetes is not high on my list of fun things to do!! The decision to begin an exercise program was a huge step for me since I had never, in almost 53 years, been inside a gym.
Prior to starting my program, anything for exercise other than walking was out of my reach, or so I thought. I feel so much better both physically and mentally since I started working with Scott. My sugar levels are back where they should be. I feel like I am in the best shape of my life and even though I have a long ways to go, I am excited to continue on this journey and see where it takes me! I am proud of my accomplishments. |
Everyone at Wilcox Wellness and Fitness is great! Scott believes that I can do everything he puts in front of me and is encouraging and supportive when I doubt myself. He drops the barriers that I place on myself and gives me the confidence that I need to reach my goals. He laughs with me instead of at me! I never know what workout will be waiting for me when I walk through the door and I look forward to finding out each day when I arrive.

I needed to start the program for my health. My cholesterol was high, and I was not feeling altogether healthy. I know exercise is crucial and I could not get myself motivated to do it on my own. I thought it would help me eat better and pay more attention to a healthier lifestyle.
I have gotten through an intense winter without feeling the effects of depression that I felt in the past. Just getting up earlier and getting to Wilcox Wellness and Fitness only two days (sometimes three) a week has helped keep me on track. I find I am much stronger and often more coordinated than I was when I started. Shoveling snow and raking in the yard have become much easier now that I know how to use my core. I feel proud of myself.
I absolutely could not keep up with this exercise if I did not have a trainer. Scott has encouraged me every single step of the way – and I look forward to seeing him on the days I do – knowing that someone is expecting me gets me there – and then when I am there I have fun. I feel very comfortable in the space with other people. I am encouraged by those who are more fit than I am. Where I thought they would intimidate me, they don't. They too, were encouraging and helpful as I began my journey. I like the fact that I never know what exercises or challenges will await me. If the music is to loud, I can request a different kind – everyone is very laid back. And I LOVE that Oliver welcomes me when I arrive.
I would tell them that they should absolutely give it a try. I would tell them how totally sure I was that I would not last more than a couple of months – and here I still am. I would tell them that rather than cancel a session if a conflict appears, I request an even earlier time! I have gotten to a point where I don't want to miss a session.

My responsibilities changed at work. I used to be in the field more and in the office less, with a lot of energy from the physical activity. Now with more time in the office I've noticed less energy through the day and especially at night.
My energy level is much higher and I've lost 20 pounds and feel much better. You don't have to think about your routine. You come in, warm up with the use of the warm up board, and then you workout. 30 minutes of effective high intensity workout and back to the office. You never know what your going to be doing. It's a full body workout, along with cardio. When I leave I don't feel that I've injured myself doing the routine. It builds a lot of energy to help you get through the day. I like the one on one attention. You will like the results. - Shane |
I suffered from a horse riding accident that left me unable to ride for a year and half. When is started training again I found that I did not have the fitness or strength to ride at the level I once could. My sister had been going to Wilcox for about a year and encouraged me to try attending the Boot Camp classes.
Because of Wilcox Fitness I have been able to achieve my goal of riding at prior level; I have been able to progress further and working to a higher goal to progress even further. I am not one to step on a scale every day; but the progress I have made due to attending Wilcox can be measured by more than numbers on the scale. I notice a change in my clothing, energy level, and more positive attitude. |
All the trainers at Wilcox Fitness care about and want the best for their clients. That is evident when in class; whether it to give encourage to do one more rep or to advise taking rest because you are pushing too hard. Everyone is treated the same regardless of their fitness level; no one is signaled out for being at a lower or higher fitness level than others. Everyone is encouraged to do their best in the most positive manner. It is a very welcoming environment.
I would encourage anyone undecided about the program to attend three boot camp classes. The class allow you to see and understand the concept of the training program. Then you can decide if personal training or smaller group training it better for you. I had never experienced this kind of program prior to going to Wilcox; but find that the program keeps you more engaged than a traditional gym environment.
