Why I Train...

We all have different reasons for why we want to commit to healthy living and why we take the time to exercise.  For me it's all about being able to be active and do all of the things that I want to do without any limitations.

This weekend my husband Eric and I will be celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary.  We are going to take a 2 night kayak camping trip with our dog Moe.  Eric and I met over 20 years ago.  We worked together and he encouraged me to start mountain biking with him and a group of other friends.  That's how we got to know each other.  We spent countless hours in the woods mountain biking throughout all four seasons.  We shared in our love for being out in nature, being active, and challenging our brains and bodies through the active lifestyle that we enjoyed living.  This was the foundation of our relationship and what brought us together into the life long commitment that we made to each other.
We got married at the top of Ragged Mountain in Camden, Maine, home of the Camden Snow Bowl.  We used the chairlift to bring our guests up to the top of the mountain, and a small group of about 12 friends and family members joined us for a mountain bike ride back to the bottom.  It was an amazing day and one that our friends still talk about to this day.
Even our wedding embodied our love for being active, and most importantly enjoying the experience of the various sports that we do TOGETHER.  We are both pretty much game for anything.  We have rock climbed together, we kayak, cross country ski, snowboard, hike....and have even been known to hike to the top of a ski mountain or two when the lift isn't running so we can get fresh tracks from the top.  The ability to choose to pursue these adventures on a whim is a real gift and one that I don't take for granted.

I train because I want to be able to continue to live an active life style with my husband.  I want to consider new adventures, new sports, and all that life has to offer without having to give it a second thought.

We dream of traveling to the Mediterranean where we can explore the Via Ferrata (translated as 'iron path", a climbing route that employs steel cables, rungs or ladders, fixed to the rock to assist in the climb and prevent falling)  through the European mountain ranges at high heights with views that are awe inspiring.  We dream of kayaking in Croatia, white water rafting in Costa Rica, and Snowboarding in Chile. ​

I train because I want to enjoy every moment of our kayaking camping trip this weekend.  I want to feel strong paddling, and I notice through my training that I do a better job at bracing in my kayak, which gives me more power and control.  When I brace I have better posture and my lower back doesn't get fatigued as quickly.  I have learned how to use my lats to create power through my training sessions, and I love feeling that translate into my paddling.  I want to sleep on the ground without feeling stiff and in pain in the morning.  I want to sit by the fire at the end of the day without feeling uncomfortable.  I want to be energized throughout my entire trip so that I can explore every nook and cranny in between the islands.   I want enjoy this time with my husband and celebrate our life together, a life that is rooted in being active and in exploration.
This is why I train.  Why do you train?
