Midcoast Humane recently joined the two animal shelters in Brunswick and Edgecomb into one bigger and better organization who provides care to 3,500 animals every year!
Did you know that it costs $20 per animal per DAY to run Midcoast Humane?
MidCoast Humane provides veterinary care and enrichment to these animals, giving them a second chance to live amazing lives, eventually sharing all of the love that they have to give with their adoption families.

They support our community in so many incredible ways.  They are about more than the animals.  They are about community, and through their various programs they help our community to be better.

They provide a number of services including education in the areas of obedience classes, feral cat programs, and school visits to promote humane treatment of animals to kids.

They also support the community through their Pet Therapy programs, provide foster care for at risk animals, and provide food for animals to a variety of local food banks so that people facing hunger don't need to make the choice between feeding themselves or their pets.

I am over the moon excited to be welcoming two AMAZING trainers to my team!  Paul Leach II and Tennyson Tappan.

At Wilcox Wellness & Fitness we take our job as trainers incredibly seriously!

So it stands to reason that I took my job of hiring two INCREDIBLE people for my trainer team very, very seriously.
Our trainers are trainers because they are passionate about helping others.
Picture
Our trainers are dedicated to

Supporting clients through the challenges of a fitness program.

Assisting them as they overcome mental and physical obstacles.

Celebrating successes and honoring each person's progress.
I am experiencing an immense amount of gratitude in having Paul and Tennyson as part of the WILCOX team.

The passion that they bring to their job as a personal trainer is evident from the minute you meet them.

They each have different personal backgrounds and experience in the field, and it is this diversity that excites me the most.

At Wilcox Wellness & Fitness we are about continual improvement.

We strive each and every day to become better.
To raise each member of the team up through constructive guidance and feedback.
To expand our knowledge and practice for the sake of the client experience.
I can't wait to learn from Tennyson & Paul.  I have no doubt that I will learn a great deal about personal training as well as be inspired what drives each of them to be their very best at what they do.

Allow me to introduce you to them....
Picture

Paul has been a personal trainer for over 10 years and is NASM and CFSC certified, and specializes in functional and corrective movements.

Paul's journey in fitness started as a client as he struggled with injuries and personal fitness goals.  It was through his own journey that he found his passion for helping others achieve great things through fitness.

Paul continually seeks out new knowledge and education, which fosters his ability to continually expand and improve upon how he trains clients.
Paul strives to support clients at all stages of their fitness journey by creating effective training sessions for clients and helping them have fun in the process.

Paul has an amazing energy and always has a smile on his face.  His true passion lies in helping people accomplish their goals, and I know that as soon as you meet Paul you'll immediately recognize these amazing qualities of his personality.  I am so excited to welcome Paul to the WILCOX team!!

Tennyson began studying for his personal training certification after he realized the amazing benefits of making his health & wellness a priority in his life.  When Tennyson got involved in a fitness routine he immediately recognized the positive effects it had on all aspects of his life.

He also found a community of supportive people and was inspired to give back by becoming a personal trainer.  Tennyson received his ACE certification in August of 2018.
Picture
Tennyson's heart and passion for helping others is evident as soon as you meet him.  I was impressed by how naturally Tennyson coached and supported clients during a practice training session.  He has the ability to put anyone at ease with a new routine, and instinctively meets clients where they are, eager to support them in visualizing their health & fitness journey.

Tennyson's goal as a personal trainer is to show people that fitness doesn't have to be all about getting the reps in.  He wants to help people recognize how fitness can empower you both physically and emotionally, enabling you to conquer all that life has to throw at you, and to live your very best life.
Please join me in welcoming Tennyson & Paul to Wilcox Wellness & Fitness, Brunswick!
We are making incredible progress in getting closer to opening day!  Tennyson & Paul will be starting their on-boarding and training on January 2nd here in Brunswick, and will be training with Mike Wilcox in Bangor the week of January 7th.
Stay tuned for updates on Charity Workouts that we will be hosting!
Come in to meet us, learn about us, and train with us all while supporting some great local charitable organizations!
Happy Training!

Small Acts of Kindness to Brighten the Day

12/17/2018

Picture
Small acts of kindness can go a long way to making someone's day.  You never know what someone else might be going through.  As Don Miguel Ruiz reminds us in his book "The Four Agreements", it's important to not take anything personally.  When you encounter someone who seems rude or unpleasant in some way, step back and consider that they may be going through a very difficult time that is affecting how they behave.  You just don't know, and responding with kindness could be just what that person needs to brighten their day.
Picture
The holidays are a funny time of year.  It's a time of year when we give thanks to all that we have in our lives.

We visit with friends & family.

We exchange gifts and express our gratitude in various ways.

But on the flip side, it's a time of year that is insanely hectic, and this can lead to mounting frustrations that leave one contemplating the spirit of the holiday season.  I encourage you to be mindful of this contradiction, and consider small acts of kindness that will foster the spirit of the holidays for you, and those around you...even complete strangers!
I love the idea of small acts of kindness that can make someone's day.

Have you ever paid the toll for the person behind you in line on the turnpike?
It's only a dollar, but it leaves one with a sense of joy for springing the surprise upon the stranger behind you.
Picture
In the spirit of extending small acts of kindness now and throughout the year I wanted to share a post that I encountered recently.
I came across this advent calendar and it inspired this blog post.  I love these ideas.  They don't take a lot of effort to extend each day.
Picture
Of course it doesn't have to be the holiday season to be extending these small gestures.  In fact, being mindful of these small gifts that you can give throughout the whole year will surely make the community we live in a happier place.
Happy Training!

Holidays mean it's time to indulge in all of our favorite foods, Right?

12/10/2018

Picture
Not so fast!
I wanted to take some time this week to talk a little bit about setting ourselves up for success during the holidays.
It is so common for us to use the holidays as a big excuse to over indulge in all of the delicious treats that are available to us every where we turn.
The problem is that when we over do it during the holidays there can be major consequences.

When we stop nourishing our bodies with healthful foods and fill up on junk food all day long it can have an immediate impact on how we feel.
Picture
Does this sound familiar?

As much as the holidays are a fun time of year when we take part in the family traditions that mean so much to us, it's also a time of year that can be incredibly stressful for many of us.  And when we're not at our best because we're living on junk food the negative implications can start piling up.
Picture
You will sleep better.  You will have a more positive mindset.  You will be less frustrated by traffic jams and long lines.
Picture
So, What's one to do?
There are so many temptations, and we all want to enjoy the holiday season, right?

Is depriving one's self of all of the indulgences of the holidays the way we want to spend it?

Christmas only comes once a year after all.
Picture
First of all, let's remember that we do want to enjoy the holidays.

Deprivation is NOT the answer by any means.
At Wilcox Wellness & Fitness we support the 80/20 rule.
That means that 80% of the time we should stay on point with our healthy habits, and the other 20% of the time we should take the time to enjoy what makes us the most happy.
The key is that the 20% should be spent on the things in which we take GREAT pleasure.
And during the holidays there are a lot of family traditions that involve not so good for us recipes that have been made for generations, holiday parties with friends and co-workers, and savory holiday meals around the table with the people who we love most.

These traditions are part of our culture.  They are part of who we are.  And the thought of eliminating these pleasures from our life is not only terribly sad, it's also unsustainable.

It's important to enjoy these traditions and take absolute pleasure in every moment, in every bite.....all in moderation.
Picture
MAKE A PLAN:  Think about the parties that you have this week.  Be sure to be on-point during the day leading up to the party. Eat a nourishing breakfast.  Continue to nourish yourself throughout the day with healthy foods.  Drink plenty of water.  This way, when you arrive at the part you won't be starving and likely to eat everything in sight.

REDUCE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION:  There's nothing wrong with enjoying a glass of wine or a cocktail at a holiday party, but drinking will cause us to snack on those savory snacks that are lurking around.  Alcohol also has a lot of empty calories.  So if you'd prefer to enjoy your co-worker's famous fudge that you look forward to each year, make the choice to enjoy the fudge rather than the obligatory glass of wine.

DRINK WATER:  When I'm at social events I usually have a glass of water in my hand.  This keeps my hands busy so I don't have the ability to carry around a plate of goodies that I don't really want, and it keeps me feeling full so I don't snack as much.

BRING A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE:  If you're going to a pot luck party, think about a healthier contribution to the food table.  You may be surprised by how many people flock to your healthier choice.  And it will ensure that you have a go-to that you can enjoy.

A favorite of mine is cantaloupe wrapped in prosciutto.  It's super easy to prepare and really delicious!  Just chop up the cantaloupe into bite size pieces, wrap in slices of prosciutto, and hold together with a festive toothpick.

Most importantly, enjoy the holidays!  Make every minute count.  Christmas is only comes once a year after all!

Happy Training!

Through Facing our Fears we Learn, Grow & Become Great

12/3/2018

Picture
There's no doubt that it's the challenges we face in life that make us stronger, and give us the opportunities to grow, and to become more than we ever imagined.
A few years ago, while in the midst of a job change I was driving and listening to NPR.  There was a story about a competitor in the Iditarod, a nearly 1000 mile race across the Alaskan tundra, encompassing nine days through isolated territory, steep climbs, below freezing temperatures, and darkness.  I remember contemplating the challenges that I faced ahead as I listened to the story about the race.  I remember how one musher talked about the challenge of the race.
Picture
When asked why one would put themselves through this kind of experienced, the champion replied that it's the challenges that we face in life that allow us to grow, and continue to strive to be our very best.
Without facing challenges our lives can become stagnant, and we cease to grow.  We cease to look beyond what we believe is possible.
We cease to strive to be our best.
Last week, as I prepared for my debut television appearance on Good Morning Maine in Bangor, I thought about this story about the Iditarod racers.  If they could face all of the perils of the Alaskan wilderness, for NINE DAYS, over ONE THOUSAND MILES, in treacherous conditions, surely I could manage 3 1/2 minutes on live TV!
The experience was incredible!  We arrived early and sat on the couch watching Blake Lipton and Gina Marini deliver the morning news to the Bangor community.  And then it happened.  Blake and Gina came over the couch during the commercial break.  The cameras turned towards us.  We made some pleasant small talk, which helped to ease my nervousness, and before I knew it.....
The count down to live began.....Three.....Two....One.....
And there I was, sitting on the couch next co-owner of Wilcox Wellness & Fitness in Bangor, Paige Wilcox.  Blake is introducing us.
I'm wondering where do I look?  At Blake?  At Paige as she's talking?  At the camera?
It doesn't matter....just smile!
The questions were asked....and then they were answered.  I found it so easy because I knew the answers to these questions deep in my heart.  I believe in what I'm doing.   I am inspired by what has already been done in Bangor.  I'm passionate about what I want to contribute to my community and to the business.
Picture
And then it was over.  I had done it.  I felt amazing!
Don't let your fears hold you back.  Embrace the challenge.  Use it as an opportunity.  An opportunity for YOU.  To be your BEST.  To go after your fullest potential.  Fear holds us back. It gives us excuses to not try.  It keeps us stagnant.  Embrace the challenge!
Even if you stumble, even if you fall, you will grow.  You will learn.  You will become better because of it.
Happy Training!!
