Your core keeps you standing and sitting upright, protects your back, and can even affect your breathing, circulation and digestion (you’ll find out how!). Nearly every movement you make originates from your core. Keeping it aligned, stable, balanced, and strong is integral to your health and well-being! Here are a few really interesting and unusual reasons you probably don’t know about... 1. Did you know that if you have a stronger core, it can actually make you a better runner? A study published in the Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research found that after 6 weeks of core training, runners clocked faster times when running 5,000 meters! 2. A strong core will help you breathe more deeply. When your core is strong, the muscles in your torso are more balanced – and that leads to having a stronger diaphragm and better posture. Both of those factors can help you take deeper breaths. According to the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, deeper breaths help you relax and reduce stress. (win-win!) And if you haven’t tried belly breathing (taking a few minutes to breathe slowly and deeply in and out of your belly and up through your lungs), try it! You’ll be amazed at how quickly it helps you to relax. 3. You’ll notice an improvement in your balance. A strong core helps align your posture so you’re not slouching forward. An aligned posture helps keep you upright, which can improve proprioception – your body’s “awareness” of where it is in space. This is REALLY important- especially as we get older. 4. A strong core also can help keep you agile, active, and moving with fewer aches and pains as you age. We’ve all seen images of elderly people with a bent-over, “stooped” posture. If you take the time to work on your core and posture now, you can save yourself a lot of pain and discomfort later in life. Since this all is so critically important we have pulled it all together for you in a guide complete with handpicked exercises sculpt a powerful core from the inside out. Click the image below to download the guide now! Core exercises are especially important if you’ve had an injury; sit or stand all day at work; spend much time in front of a steering wheel, computer, or phone; or if you’re a new mom. All of those factors can lead to muscular imbalances that, after a while, can contribute to pain and even injury. Training your core properly can help counteract all that, plus have you standing taller and feeling more confident! We are BEYOND excited to welcome Xander Karris to Wilcox Wellness & Fitness for his summer fellowship through the Innovate for Maine Program. Xander is our 4th Innovate for Maine Fellow and we are so excited to be working with him to help make more of an impact in the communities that we support. Xander brings with him excitement and enthusiasm for problem solving and is currently pursuing a degree in social/abnormal psychology with minors in business administration and innovation engineering. From Xander: Hi, my name is Alexander Karris, but you can call me Xander (pronounced like ‘Zander’). I’m an Innovate for Maine fellow and was lucky enough to have been paired with Wilcox Wellness & Fitness for my summer fellowship. During my time here, I’ll be helping expand our marketing strategy, and developing and innovating our franchise program. I’m currently a senior at the University of Maine, in Orono, where I’m pursuing a degree in social/abnormal psychology with minors in business administration and innovation engineering. I also have an honors concentration, which will allow me to conduct primary research on social media use in college students for my thesis the next two semesters. Wherever my future takes me, I want to help people solve their problems. As an innovator, it's directed towards whomever is benefitting from the product or service I'm creating or helping to create. As a psychologist, it's by identifying faulty cognitions or maladaptive behaviors, and helping to create solutions to increase people’s well-being and life satisfaction. No matter the project or person, I love helping others reach their goals. You’ll find me greeting you with a smile at the front desk, or walking around the facility, recording all of the hard work you’ll be putting in with our dedicated trainers. I hope to see you soon!

It’s been said that fear of failure is fear of growth. It can be pretty painful when things don’t go as planned, but I am thankful for everything that I learn every single time I fail and I wouldn't trade that wisdom for the world.
I heard on a podcast recently that most actors have to go to 100s of auditions to get one yes. That is 99 nos and a lot of people give up. UNLESS - you count every no as one no closer to that one yes. Can you imagine that mindset shift? You go to an audition, you pour your heart out and you get your 89th - ‘no, sorry we don’t think you are right for this role.’ Instead of being discouraged you are encouraged - SWEET - 89 nos - I am getting that much closer to the yes. And you are - because you learned something new in those 89 experiences. I am constantly getting nos - learning and failing - failing and learning and I know (or I hope) that is getting me this much closer to my big YES. I don’t even think of it as failing any more - just trying something new that didn’t work.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned by failing at something? I’d love if you joined the conversation on our Facebook Page. Leave your insight in a comment here so we can all learn together! Happy Training! Paige Looking for more of a perspective shift?
