Client Spotlight - Suzan Bell

Suzan Bell is the perfect example of what we believe people can accomplish at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness and we couldn't be more proud of her accomplishments.  Suzan was in attendance at a presentation Mike gave at the local Rotary meeting in November last year.  As soon as the presentation was over she walked straight up to him and said, “I want my life back! How do I get started?”  They met the following day and she began working out with Scott 2 sessions per week and has not looked back.  On top of those sessions Suzan works out on her own, walking and now JOGGING! She just completed her first 5k!  She has also incorporated the foam roller to her daily morning routine.  She says this has been working very well to keep her body healthy.   Suzan certainly got her life back!

From Suzan, on her accomplishments:

“The biggest change has been on the inside.  I have more confidence and I believe in myself again.  I’m really good at telling myself “I can’t possibly do this or that”….Now, I believe I can do anything I set my mind to.”

​“On the outside I have lost over 20 pounds, I have more energy, and I am stronger then I have been in 20 years.” 

​“I no longer want to sit on the couch or take naps all weekend.  I want to get out and enjoy my life, not watch it from my living room window.  Also, my back does not hurt anymore.”

From Suzan’s trainer, Scott Philbrick:

Having the opportunity to train Suzan and see the transformation she has made, in a short amount of time, makes my job incredibly satisfying.  Being able to witness, every week, the changes mentally and physically which can come with commitment to one's self is a great experience.  Suzan is proof, with set goals, mental fortitude, and the determination to succeed anything is possible!

From Suzan, about her Trainer:

"Scott is more than a trainer, he is my friend.  I know he will never let me hurt myself, nor will he let me “wimp out”. My first workout with him, I was on the floor, after doing the shortest plank in the history of the world.  Out of breath, I thought I would take a quick rest on my hands and knees.  Scott told me to “stand up, be proud of yourself, you did it!”  That stuck with me.  If he thinks I can do it, then I should know I can do it too.  He doesn’t let me give up, and has helped me believe in myself again.  To hold my head up high because I tried.”

Rich has come so far and has a positive attitude towards whatever task is at hand.  He not only works out here, but takes what he learns and brings it home to his family and friends.  Wherever he goes, he is talking about the journey of a healthy lifestyle.  This motivates people when they see and talk to him.  His ATTITUDE is truly inspiring and every workout he does, he performs it to the fullest – as if it is the last workout he will have.  He encompasses our mission statement and not only changes his life, but others around him. If you spend your time dreading your workout and simply do the workout to get it over with, you will not see the results you want.  Rich realized that and that is one of the many reasons why he is successful.
We love that Rich realizes it’s a lifestyle - not a temporary fix or "diet." It is a way of life that can change your whole outlook and attitude towards self-confidence and the way you live!
From Rich – about his journey

After starting and stopping several programs and plans over many years,  I found a program that helped me get my nutrition and focus right.  However, even with those two important pieces of the puzzle, I knew that something was missing. That missing piece was fitness. I had no problem sticking to healthy “clean” eating, but had no idea where to start when it came the fitness piece.

I had been an overweight, inactive child. This followed me all the way through life. I had tried gym memberships before, and I felt like a fish out of water. I knew I needed someone to help guide me into a new and healthy lifestyle. I was motivated and ready! I searched through online listings and found Wilcox Wellness & Fitness and decided to stop in…but I chickened out! I decided to make a phone call…but you guessed it…I chickened out again. So I sent an email and soon received a phone call from Mike. A day or so later, I met with Jon, and decided to give Wilcox’s Wellness & Fitness a try - a decision, I am so glad I made!

I have seen some great results on the scale. Having lost close to 90lbs since adopting a “clean nutritional plan” and beginning training with Jon. I have also seen some great results that can’t be measured on the scale. I have a major boast in confidence, improved posture, and an overall better attitude. I can do more with my son, and occasionally beat him in a race.

Jon keeps sessions interesting, and fun. I can’t believe, I now refer to working out as fun! Jon is a great encourager and motivator, and has helped me to stay focused on my goals. Jon has designed a customized program to accommodate my fitness level and injures, all while, helping me achieve my fitness goals.
From Rich’s Trainer: Rich started training a year ago - the change he has made for his health has been phenomenal. When Rich first started, he was new to the functional fitness approach. He was used to traditional gyms where it is easy to fall into a comfort zone; however, comfort zones are not conducive to creating change. It requires a great amount of courage to get uncomfortable and change oneself. Rich found that courage and created his change. Now he moves better and looks healthier, but most importantly, he has a different sense of confidence about himself. He has embraced a new wellness mindset, with working hard in the gym and keeping himself honest with food choices. I am proud to be a part of his health and wellness journey. He has had a positive impact on others around him, himself, and myself. Continue to make an impact Rich!

At Wilcox Wellness & Fitness, we strive to help you live the healthiest life possible by giving you the tools and resources to make small changes that can have a large impact on your health.  This image outlines the top 12 fruits and vegetables that have been found to have the highest levels of pesticides when conventionally grown.  These pesticides can cause a negative impact on your health.  Strive to purchase organic fruits and vegetables that are listed on the dirty dozen.  This image also shows the clean fifteen – the fruits and vegetables that have the lowest levels of pesticides when conventionally grown.  Of the items listed on the clean fifteen, money can be saved by buying the conventionally grown option over to the organic option.  The best choice for the most nutrition options is always organic and local available at Bangor area farmers markets.

365 Days of Commitment

It was 1 year ago today that Lori made her commitment to healthy living and began training with us at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness. We received a letter this morning from Lori in which she shared her 365 day journey with us. Lori's story is a journey of consistency and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. In the last year, Lori has truly enhanced her life by forming healthy habits she will keep with her for a lifetime. Here is her letter:

Hi Mike, 

It wasn't until my alarm went off this morning that I realized that today is July 1st...my one year anniversary attending Wilcox Wellness and Fitness! I'm not a person who remembers dates or celebrates anniversaries (I have to look up my own wedding date, much to the annoyance of my husband) but I remember June 30th of 2014 because I could palpably feel that change was coming. 

I remember bits of my first workout. I remember doing the running drills and thinking, oh no, I can't run. Why do they have to do running here? (I still think this some days, but I'm getting over it. ) You poked your head into the line going around and said, "Hi, I'm Mike." I introduced myself and you said "Welcome". I completed that first workout and even though I was probably a mess and definitely couldn't finish everything, I felt strong! More than that I thought, how strong will I be if I do this all the time, consistently? 

Consistency has been an issue for me. I love fitness but have never stuck with it consistently for more than a few months at a time. What has changed this time is I WANT to come every day. It is not a chore. It's been an amazing mental transformation. I needed a fitness community and Wilcox Wellness & Fitness has created an amazing one.

Physically, I feel so much stronger than I did a year ago. I've tended to focus on the wrong things in the past, such as my weight or appearance, but this year, even when those habits of thought tried to tell me to focus on "losing weight", I instead concentrated on how much less anxious I am, how my lower back doesn't ache anymore...ever, and the awesome feeling of painful sneezes reminding me that I got an amazing core workout in the day before. Even though my focus has been on how I feel, without trying to lose weight, I have had physical changes this past year that are better than a number on a scale. I'm learning to not be obsessed with the scale, but with my body and it's ability to function.

All this to say THANK YOU! Seriously, you are great at what you do! Katie is so positive and has been helpful and seriously motivating to me. Scott seems to have an extra sense for detecting when I'm not giving it my all and handing me a heavier weight. Jon, he scares me with his giddiness for torturing us, but he's great and his workouts are always unique and effective.
