For the month of August, we asked Matt about his favorite ways to stay active outdoors. Here's what he had to say: The dog days of summer have come and gone. I do like summer, but I’m not a big fan of the heat, especially not when it’s over ninety degrees and super humid like we get in New England. To stay active while also staying cool, I did a lot of swimming. I love to swim! Growing up in northern Maine, there were ample places to swim and I did it religiously. Nowadays, I love to head to a lake or a pool and swim the afternoon away. I can get in a full-body workout and just float when I need a break- I don’t even realize I’m exercising when I’m swimming because it’s just so much fun. It’s so much easier on my knees, too. I helped install a pool at my daughter’s house earlier in the year, and my other daughter has a camp on a lake, so I had so much opportunity this summer to enjoy the water. My grandkids love the water, too, so I got to spend time with them and even teach them how to swim. There’s just nothing like sitting on the beach and having a great afternoon while swimming and watching the kids play. I recently spent a week on the west coast in central California and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. Beach life was amazing- riding in the dunes, walking on the cliff trails- it was just so beautiful. And I got in plenty of steps! I’d like to go back there from here on out as long as my health and job will let me. It was a new experience and I loved it! I was inspired to continue my training sessions so I can get in better shape so I can hike more and maybe even learn to surf! The surfing looked so fun! It also looked like a young man’s game, but I am still young, right?! I may have to resort to just being happy riding my bike and enjoying the scenery, but surfing is going on my bucket list! - Matt

It’s the number 1 thing we do as a group of trainers to set our clients up for success. We want our clients to show up to train, not just to workout - so, what does this mean? When a client is training in a training session, there is an absolute focus on getting better. You can see it in their eyes, watch the focus on their face, witness their enthusiasm of trying and failing and trying again. You can even see the frustration when a client notices they missed a piece of the technique on a certain repetition. It could be as simple as holding your breath during a movement. When you train, these things bother you. The client who is training is trying to maximize the effort they are putting forth in combination with amazing technique. This is what leads them to the results they desire. So, what’s the opposite of the ‘training mindset?” It’s the “workout mindset”. There is a difference, allow me to explain….. Clients who are in the “workout mindset” are typically doing their best to make themselves really tired. There is a ton of effort involved, but not enough focus on the technique side of things. The mindset is I have to do all the reps or I have to lift this much weight, or I have to finish to the buzzer regardless of quality technique. The mindset sounds like this: ‘The faster I move + the more I move + the more tired I get = results’ is not a winning equation. The result of clients “working out” is boredom, fatigue, frustration, depression, injuries, and a whole lot of time wasted. The result of the client who “trains” is overcoming fear and self-doubt, understanding that discomfort leads to results, and acknowledge the seriousness of each movement, each effort. “I’m going to sprint as fast as I can, recover, jog back, and not go again until I know I can sprint again.” (versus turning the sprint into a jog) = results for the client, teaches discipline, learning limits, pushing through fear, testing the motivation. Clients with this mindset will find things inside of them they didn’t know existed, efforts they didn’t think they could make, and have successes in life (and in the gym) they couldn’t have imagined. This is why we choose to train not just workout. This is why we work so hard to foster the focus of our clients on connecting their minds to their bodies, not just do move their bodies. Training is a mindset. Training makes you better each session. Training brings you things in life that do not currently exist for you. You can do it. Get out there and TRAIN!! We can’t wait to connect with you and support you along your journey with healthy living! For the month of July, we asked Matt to tell us about what he does to stick to healthy living during the tempting summer months. Here's what he had to say: Summer can be a tough time to stick to a healthy lifestyle. I had several events that I attended that involved good food, beer, and stops at local restaurants and pubs. It’s certainly not easy taking a ride up to Grammy’s Restaurant in the county when everyone I’m with orders fried clams, fried seafood platters, and whoopie pies as big as my head! So, here are a few things that helped me stay on track. At restaurants, I make sure to drink a glass or two of water before I order. I order a salad to eat before my meal and, instead of french fries, I order a double serving of veggies. If I’m at a restaurant that only has fried food, I try to order a burger or grilled chicken instead of fried. When it comes to desserts, that’s really tough for me because I have a wicked sweet tooth, so I try to just have a small piece. If I really feel like I need to have dessert, sometimes I’ll eat part of it and throw out the rest. I hate to waste money, but throwing some out is the better option for my health, and it makes me think twice about spending money on it next time! Overall, eating at home is easier for me because all my life I was a meat and potatoes man. So... now I try to be a meat and veggies man (I’m still working on eating as many veggies as I should, but I am trying!). I barbecue a lot and I enjoy the meat, but a health tip I’ve learned is to try to avoid sugary barbecue sauce. I use dry rubs instead, which are a healthier option and add some heat. And summer’s been great for drinking more water because when it’s hot out, I always end up wanting and drinking more! I know that all of these health secrets are not secrets at all - they’re just the facts that most of us know. Eat right (especially lots of veggies), drink plenty of water, and try to stay away from fried foods and sweets. Hmmm...I think I remember that being said to me most of my life...imagine. - Matt Are you ready to take the first step? If you are ready to take the first step, we are ready to support you! This past weekend I took the time to go horseback riding. Horses have been a passion of mine since I was a very little girl- really since I could ever remember. There is just something inside of me that is so lit up by being around these big animals. I saved my money, begged my parents, made friends with other ‘horse’ people, and happily cleaned out stalls to get into horseback riding lessons from the time I was 9 until 16. I stopped riding when I started college (you know to be all practical and stuff…) and didn’t pick it up. Here we are more than half my life later - riding again for the first time in 19 years. All of the smells, just being in the barn, brushing the horse - it was all magical. I found that there was a lot that I remembered and also a lot that I forgot but I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face. Riding, I was winded and I am confident my whole body is going to be sore for days - using muscles in a way that I haven’t used them in nearly 20 years. It feels so good to be back in the saddle and I am so happy that I made the time for it last weekend. I am going to find a way to fit this back into my life. Saying that here for some external accountability… So please, feel free to check in with me! What about you - what is the thing that sets your soul on fire? What did you do as a kid that you haven’t done in years? Any other horse people here? Paige Wilcox Wellness & Fitness WANT MORE OF THIS? Be sure to connect with us on Social Media. We can’t wait to connect with you and support you along your journey with healthy living! Truth talk- I just used the smallest kettlebell we have and it kicked my butt! It was a seemingly simple move - a squat with one arm overhead - but I could not get it to save my life. Literally - I went to squat and I could not move. Something was locked up inside me. I was in a group with 6 other people who didn’t seem to have any trouble with this movement. No. Big. Deal. This sort of thing used to stress me out. Am I not good enough? Why can’t I do this? Everyone is better than me. Oh, gosh, this is embarrassing. No. Big. Deal. We are human, we are going to have good days, we are going to have bad days. We are going to have days where we thought we were 13 over the weekend and could waterski like we were the champions of the world and then sit at a computer for 8 hours and then get to a training session and maybe have some mobility issues. No. Big. Deal. Life happens - you have good days, you have bad days. Some things are harder for you than others - you are better at some things than others.
It is no big deal. Our trainers are here to meet you where you are. Support you. Encourage you, and help you get to where you want to go. Our community is here to support you, encourage you and get you to where you want to go. Nobody is watching for you to use the teeny tiny kettlebell. You will be applauded here for focusing on form with low weight or no weight. You will go farther by focusing on the basics. You will have good days. You will have bad days. The true measure of success is showing up, being consistent, and treating your body right. Lots of love, Paige (and the teensiest, tiniest kettlebell we have) WANT MORE OF THIS? Kids are starting a new school year, summer is winding down, and we are getting into a new fall routine. I LOVE summer and I think that this past summer was one of the very best summers we have ever had but I am excited to be home more, get into a good routine, and get my crockpot running. Is that weird? Anyone else with me? I am making my favorite Chicken Burrito bowls - see how fast I can crank these out? #kidding I love these chicken burrito bowls - kids love them, they are so simple to prepare, and they freeze amazingly well. If you are new to slow cooker cooking - WELCOME!!! You are totally going to love it. Here are some tips that I have learned along the way: The more vegetables the better. Just throw them all in there! Whatever you have on hand – whatever you are feeling. If your veggies are looking a little ‘sad’ their flavors will perk right up in your slow cooker. In this demonstration I was using up some farm share veggies but I also added a bag of frozen riced cauliflower. I love how the cauliflower melts right into the sauce and you get an extra dose of veggies without even knowing it! No peeking! Seriously… keep the lid shut. You don’t need to stir the pot or do any checking. Trust in your SlowCooker. Everytime you open the lid, you are losing all of the heat and your quick check can add a lot of time to the cooking of your meal. Know your conversions. Slow cookers are pretty forgiving and if your recipe called to be cooked on low for 8 hours but it’s noon and you haven’t gotten into the kitchen yet… no problem – you can cook that meal on high for x hours. Layer Smart: I like to get creative with my kitchen creation. Often I cook without a recipe or just use a recipe for inspiration and cooking guidelines. With slow cooking, it’s important to know the order your ingredients go in the pot. Enjoy! Wilcox Wellness & Fitness WANT MORE OF THIS? Be sure to connect with us on Social Media. We can't wait to connect with you and support you along your journey with healthy living. Your focus determines your perspective. Don’t give up what you want most for what you want right now in this moment. Let’s say you are getting ready to take a shower but as soon as you turn on the faucet, you realize there’s no hot water. None. In fact, it is freezing cold.
What do you do? Do “push through” the freezing cold water and get in there, so you can feel nice and refreshed afterwards? Or do you wait until later? Likely it depends on what you’ve got going on that day... You might decide you’re not that dirty and you can just throw a little dry shampoo on it and wait till later. But if you’ve got something special going on like a big presentation or a date - taking the cold shower might be worth it. The water feels the same in both cases, but it’s what we’re focused on that makes it more (or less!) tolerable. If we focus only on the discomfort – the few moments we’re actually IN the shower, feeling that freezing water beating down on us – then it doesn’t seem worth it. But if we focus on the outcome – how we feel AFTER – then we’re more willing to experience the temporary discomfort. It’s like that with almost everything that takes us out of our comfort zone. For example …. If you want to try a new training program, the first couple times you attend you might feel a little nervous. If you only focus on that short period of nervousness, you probably won’t start in the training program. And you’d miss out on everything you’d learn and the new, amazing people you would meet, and wonderful community you would belong to. But if you’re focused on the outcome – why you want to start the training program in the first place – that tiny bit of discomfort is definitely worth it! The Takeaway: Sometimes we get so focused on the temporary pain or discomfort that we completely forget about the gain … When you shift your focus to the outcome, you can make it happen. So tell me, is there a situation in your own life that comes to mind? Where do you need to refocus on the outcome instead of the temporary discomfort?
