We did it! We raised $11,500 this year for the Good Shepherd Food Bank with Burpees for Turkeys!12/13/2021
Mike and I just wanted to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to Burpees for Turkeys this weekend.
We had a blast with you all at the event and we hope that you did too. Together, with our amazing team in Brunswick, we raised over $11,500 to help with hunger relief in Maine. That brings the total fundraising tally of Burpees for Turkeys to $65,311. AMAZING! We are just so proud of the impact this community is able to create with programs like this.
I want to send a special thank you to Matt and Shirar from the United Way for helping streamline the online donation processing and for their help the day of the event.
Thank you to the Good Shepherd Food Bank for all they do to help with hunger-relief in Maine. It still blows my mind that 1 in 5 children in Maine live with food insecurity and I am so thankful for all the work that GSFB does to help with this huge issue. Thank you to Shannon and the rest of our team who put in a lot of work to have this event go smoothly. Most importantly, thank YOU for joining together to raise money and awareness to help with the effort of ending food insecurity in Maine. Mike and I feel so blessed that you all have chosen to be part of our community here at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness and it is events like this that remind us how lucky we are to know each and every one of you. We were so excited to participate in United Way's Day of caring last week. We had signed up to rake leaves but it was raining cats and dogs so instead we helped with some indoor projects. We had a blast and enjoyed coming together to help our community.
Special thanks to everyone who helped with this project. Lots of love, Paige & Mike Wilcox This past weekend we hosted our 3rd annual Burpees for Turkeys event to help raise money to end food insecurity in Maine. Maine ranks 7th in the nation in terms of food insecurity. 1 in 5 children in Maine live with food insecurity meaning they lack the nutritious foods to live a healthy lifestyle. As a mother, this is devastating to me. I can not imagine not having the resources to feed my child. And yes - I am that mother that carries snacks everywhere and my 3 year old knows how to hit me in the super soft spot. If he wants to delay the bedtime routine - he can say in a little voice with big eyes “but I am hungry.” I know that he is playing me but it turns me inside out every single time. Every. Single. Time. For a lot of families in our state, mothers are making the decision to keep the heat on or to feed their families. That must be an incredible struggle. Knowing that your child is truly hungry (not playing you) and not having the ability to fill their little bellies. I am so thankful for organizations like the Good Shepherd Food Bank whose mission is to end food insecurity in Maine. They are the hub that distributes the food to our local food pantries in Maine. The Good Shepherd Food Bank is doing an amazing job to help ensure these children and families have the food they need in order to live a healthy life. They have a huge focus of not only filling bellies but by providing nutritious food from local Maine Farms through their Mainers Feeding Mainers Program. Something that I am incredibly proud to support. The Good Shepherd Food Bank is able to leverage the money we raise through our Burpees for Turkeys event and stretch the dollars to do the most good. They can feed a hungry child for an entire week with just a $5 donation. Just $5 per week feeds a hungry child for an entire week. AMAZING! They can provide 4 meals to families in need with just a $1 donation. We are so proud to say that with this event, we have raised over $9,500. That is 38,097 meals for Maine families who otherwise would have been hungry. OR - enough to prevent 36 children from being hungry for an entire year. We are so thankful for the way that our community pulled together to create this kind of impact in our community. For our event this past Saturday, we had over 80 clients sign up to help raise money to end hunger in Maine. One of our clients, Tammy McLaughlin raised over $900 which translated to about 188 burpees. Now, if you don’t know what a burpee is… it can be summed up as everyone's least favorite exercise. 188 burpees is a lot of burpees. That didn’t stop Tammy from hitting the fundraising to end hunger in Maine hard, in her WABI 5 interview, she said “I am willing to do as many burpees as people will pay me to do.” She is a great sport and did an incredible job knocking out those burpees! It feels good to make an impact. Knowing that you have done something to make the world just a little bit better. I feel a strong connection towards helping end food insecurity in Maine which is why I have partnered with the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
If you don’t already, I would encourage you to find a cause that you connect with and go after it this holiday season. It could be as simple as volunteering a few hours of your time, or bringing awareness to the issue you are passionate about, or just donating a little bit of money - it can go a very long way! It is incredibly inspiring and uplifting to know that you have made a difference in the world and it is easier than you may think. You would be amazed out how much you can fill your spirit and IMPACT your community by supporting others who are in need. We have already started the planning process for Burpees for Turkeys next year and we are excited to have even more of an impact to help end hunger in Maine. A crew of clients from Wilcox Wellness & Fitness participated in the first annual Muddy Mainer this past weekend. The crew had a blast as they climbed, crawled, slipped, and sloshed through the mud at the obstacle course race in Orrington. The team stayed together to help each other with each obstacle which many times required a good amount of strategy. The team had a great time and came through only with a few minor bumps and bruises. They are already in the process of recruiting more members for next year's event! Stay tuned to join the Wilcox Muddy Mainers next year!
Happy Training! Every day, kids and adults are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that take away the most basic freedoms – the freedom to walk, talk, hug and even breathe.
I’m going behind bars. Yes, that’s right — me, Paige Wilcox in the slammer! I am doing a little time, to do a lot of good by being a Jailbird at an MDA Lock-Up to help give those freedoms back. Please join me as I fight for everyday freedoms for individuals with muscular dystrophy and donate to my bail to support the thousands of kids and adults who will be served by MDA this year. Thank you to everyone for your support of Good Shepherd Food bank and Burpees for Turkeys! We are so happy to have raised enough money to provide over 23,000 meals to area children and families in need. The trainers are a bit sore today but it is all worth it!
Today at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness you may see our trainers and some clients with their purple pinkies! The Bangor Lunchtime Rotary Club came out to share more information with us and to set up a dip station! Purple pinkies serve as a symbol for polio immunizations. A donation of $1 covers the cost of a single immunization! Congratulations to everyone who completed the black bear marathon, half marathon, and 10k over the weekend at UMaine! What a fun event! Super Special Congratulations to all the firsts out there - first 10K, first 1/2 Marathon - way to go! What an accomplishment!
