Healthy Living is a Lifestyle, Not a Resolution

3/2/2021

Research shows that 80% of people who set new year's resolutions abandon them by February.

DEVASTATING.

And that is why we encourage you to commit to healthy habits that you can sustain for a lifetime vs any quick fix.

How many times have you felt by this point in a new year that it was all going to be a failure – that, since you already had dropped a resolution or even forgot to make one, that you were doomed to have another year of unmet healthy living aspirations?

Well, I’m here to keep you from going down that rabbit hole again. You can still have your best year yet. You just have to get your mind wrapped around it.
Picture
  1. Now is the perfect time to start. Yesterday’s gone, and tomorrow isn’t promised – so focus on what you can do today to make better choices and take the right actions.
  2. Make a plan and tell one or two other people about it. Accountability is a powerful motivator.
  3. Focus on a process you’ll enjoy, not the goals you’re laboring toward. CELEBRATE your consistency.
  4. Make a list of why you want to commit to healthy living – as long or as short a list as you like – and keep it handy for those times when you’re discouraged.
  5. Look at the future as endless opportunities to live a better life, not a litany of chores and resolutions.

Healthy living is a lifestyle, not a resolution. It’s a commitment to yourself, and that shouldn’t change because of the calendar.

You got this!

Lots of love,
Paige

....For legit chocolate cravings

INGREDIENTS
  • 1/3 c. virgin coconut oil
  • 1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp. maple syrup

PEANUT BUTTER FILLING
  • 2 tbsp. virgin coconut oil
  • 1/2 c. peanut butter (made from 100 percent peanuts)
  • 1 tbsp. maple syrup
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp. fine sea salt

DIRECTIONS
  1. Line a mini muffin pan with 12 mini paper muffin cups.
  2. To make the chocolate: In a small bowl, microwave the coconut oil for 30 seconds, or just until melted. Stir in the cocoa powder and maple syrup.
  3. Place 1 teaspoon of the chocolate in each muffin cup to fill the bottom. Place the muffin tin in the freezer until the chocolate solidifies, about 5 minutes.
  4. To make the peanut butter filling: In a small bowl, microwave the coconut oil for 30 seconds, or just until melted. Use a fork to stir in the peanut butter, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt.
  5. Spoon about a tablespoon of peanut butter filling on top of the chocolate. Then spoon another teaspoon of chocolate on top of the peanut butter filling to fill the cups (if the chocolate begins to harden, microwave it for 10 seconds). Place peanut butter cups in the freezer until solid, about 30 minutes.
  6. Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer. Remove from the freezer 15 minutes prior to serving.

*this is the actual recipe from Run Fast Eat Slow. NOTE: I don't make the peanut butter filling - I just put standard peanut butter in the middle.

Lots of love,
Paige

Let's Write a New Story About January

12/29/2020

It is almost New Year's... Let’s write a new story

Poor January. It has such a sad, predictable story. You know the tale already.

Everybody always looks forward to seeing January.

Too much, in fact. Our excitement creates too much pressure for our January, and every year we believe things will work out this time. But then, inevitably, January lets us down.

No. That’s not quite right, is it?

January doesn’t let us down. Within a few days or weeks, we let it down -- abandoning the goals and hopes we had set for a new healthy lifestyle.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Let’s write a new story for January!

First, let’s not make January the hero.

You are the hero of your own story.

Second, give January an appropriate role. You can use it to set some new goals if you like. But what if you put all that “resolutions” nonsense aside and focused instead on living your best life on January 1? And then again on January 2? And the 3rd, and the 4th, and on and on… doing your best to enjoy a healthy lifestyle as best you can, one day at a time.

Ready to get started? Let me know in the comments and I will share with you how you can get started for FREE.

Lots of love,

Change your mindset and you’ll change your behaviors one step at a time

I’m not buying it – and you shouldn’t either

How are you feeling these days? Are you stressed with the holidays, work, and family? Way too busy to exercise, eat right, and otherwise take care of yourself?

We hear it this time every year.

And, frankly, we’re not buying it this time.

The problem isn’t that you’re too busy. It’s not that you don’t have the time. And it’s not that you can’t afford it.

The problem is your mindset.

It tells you the same lies all the time but wraps them in special packaging for the holidays.

  • I have to take care of others, not myself.
  • I’ll make better choices tomorrow, but tonight a pizza on the couch is just the ticket.
  • I work hard, so I deserve to take it easy.
  • I don’t know how to get started, and I’ve never been athletic or fit, so I can’t start now.

Do any of those sound familiar? Aren’t you tired of them yet?

When you reach your TURNING POINT, when you have an a-ha moment that inspires you to take the first step, that’s when you start to address that faulty mindset so you can start making positive changes.

The mistake is waiting for it to show up from some external source. That does happen sometimes, but you might not like it. A doctor’s warning. A lover’s harsh words. A wardrobe that sits in the closet.

So, don’t look for something else to inspire you. Change your mindset and you’ll change your behaviors one step at a time. We are here to help!

If it's Out of Your Control, Let it Go

12/18/2020

If it’s out of your control, let it go

This year has been many things. Heartbreaking. Frustrating. Downright surreal.

It’s also wrecked plans for everyone ever since March, and there’s no reason to think that everything will get magically better in January.

How you choose to perceive everything in your world will dictate your happiness.

And it is a choice.

Everything comes down to our perception of things as they really are, not as filtered through our lens of how we think they should be. If we go around demanding things of people, places, or things (especially a global pandemic), then we’re going to be frustrated and disappointed.
Picture
So, instead, let’s accept the simple truth. This year’s holiday season is going to be different than others, and that’s OK.

Say it out loud: This year’s holiday season is going to be different than others, and that’s OK.

I won’t get to do everything I want to do.

I won’t get to see everyone I want to see.

And I can’t do anything to make the daily news reports any better.

But I can accept all of that, and treasure each day as it is, including:

What I CAN do.

Whom I CAN see.

How I interpret events in my community and the world.

Every day, I can’t control my thoughts, but I can choose what to think about. Similarly, I can’t control what I want, but I CAN CONTROL WHAT I DO.

That includes what I eat and drink, how I exercise, whether I manage my emotions like an adult or a child, and whether I accept things for what they are. And sometimes it means seeking help from others.

Happy holidays!

Build traditions that work for you, not against you

12/14/2020

Build traditions that work for you, not against you

As a whole, traditions are great, right? They’re a big part of the holidays and human life in general, helping us feel connected to previous generations and nice memories.

But individually, well, they can be a bit restrictive, can’t they? And many aren’t at all healthy, are they?

Do you really want to keep dressing formally just because it is what your family has always done?

And what about eating too much every year because our culture seems to prioritize it? Or drinking too much because you always did before… and then spending all day after the big meal collapsed on the couch…

See? Just because your family might’ve done something every year, that doesn’t mean you can’t discard it, amend it, or create something to replace it.

And since this year’s going to be different anyway, given the pandemic, why not look for ways to build new, healthy traditions of your own? It’ll be fun, and a great way to help friends and family get creative, too.
Picture
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking!
  • Try a healthier recipe for a family favorite.
  • Or a foreign version, a vegan version, etc.
  • Make an ornament that’s unique to each year.
  • Get everyone outside for some kind of outdoor movement, even if it’s cold out. A nice walk, building a snowman, or sledding will burn some calories and create fun memories.
  • Add a board game to the after-dinner mix. You can even do it virtually if you’re separated this year.
  • Give the kids a task of their own choosing – something creative that helps create healthy habits.
  • Build on a standing tradition or give it a twist. Again, this year, that should be pretty easy, since necessity is the mother of invention and we’ve all had to make so many changes already!

Keep an open mind and allow for spontaneity and even “error,” since the best ideas are often happy accidents. Hold the past gently with one hand while reaching out to the future with a loving touch. That’s a tradition we can all start every day.

Happy holidays!

12/10/2020

It’s what you do NOW that makes the difference!

Are you psyched for the new year? Ready to make some changes once the calendar flips?

Here’s a hot secret: You don’t have to wait!

The choices you make today will determine where you are on January 1. Instead of letting these weeks go by unproductively (or worse), wouldn’t you rather kick off 2021 with a few weeks of healthy living behind you?

Commit today to make the right choices and take the healthy steps FOR TODAY ONLY. To eat well, exercise, and manage your stress. To wake up tomorrow feeling better than if you did the opposite.

Then do it again tomorrow – and repeat your best efforts every day as we head into January.

Those kinds of daily commitments are what will help you succeed all year, and for your whole lifetime.

So, what are you waiting for? Ready to get after it?

Attitude of Gratitude

11/30/2020

Picture
Practicing an “attitude of gratitude” has physical, mental, spiritual, and social benefits.

I know life is hard sometimes – this year, maybe more than most. And that’s partly why being deliberately grateful is so helpful. When our hearts are flowing with gratitude, there’s not much room left for fear or apprehension. Grateful people tend to be happier and healthier than their grumpier counterparts. Saying “thank you” spreads happiness one little bit at a time.

So, this year, amid all the hustle and bustle, be sure to express your gratitude on a regular basis.

Write a daily gratitude list.

Tell someone you appreciate him or her every day – a friend, family member… heck, the delivery driver! It doesn’t matter.

Journal, meditate, or engage your spirituality with thankfulness.

Here’s a bonus tip: Do this even when you don’t feel like it.

I promise it will make you feel better – and that’s always something to be thankful about.

The Myth of Having Too Little Time

11/27/2020

We are heading into a “special” time of year for your health and fitness:

The holidays! And not just any holiday - but the holidays of 2020. I want you to be ready and fired up!

Earlier this month, I posted about finishing the year STRONG. But there’s something that happens this time of year – it’s like clockwork.

During the holidays, a surprising number of people say they are “too busy” to workout and stick to their health and fitness routines.

I wanted to talk about the “too busy” excuse... because you are WAY TOO IMPORTANT to let that get in the way!

Earlier this year, we had a wakeup call to be grateful and thankful for our health – and we also had a lot of extra time on our hands.

Even with that extra time – just an observation here, not a judgment – many of us let our routines slide. Because we were too stressed, too worried, and everything felt too uncertain.

Don’t let being “too” anything stand in the way of your wellness! It’s time to get ahead of it, and the time to start is NOW.
Picture
You’ve probably heard of SMART goals before. It’s all about setting specific, measurable goals that are attainable, relevant to your life, and TIME-SPECIFIC. They have a deadline!

Well, we have a big deadline coming up – Dec. 31, 2020.

What can you do between now and then so that you feel stong, healthier, and more energized than you do right now?

What can you do NOW so you’re not playing catch-up in January and start off the New Year with momentum!?

Let’s plan ahead and take action on the things we CAN control.

Today, take a few minutes to think about changes you can make. Things like:

● Planning your meals ahead of time
● Finding 20-30 minutes to exercise 3-4 times a week
● Meditating 5-10 minutes a day
● Hydrating yourself - drinking half your body weight in fluid ounces daily

Then, take ACTION!

I’ll be in your corner, cheering you on! Just comment here and let me know what you are going to be working on to finish this year strong.

How Gratitude Reduces Stress

11/20/2020

It’s almost the week of Thanksgiving! And with all of the fun and busyness of the holiday, things can get a little hectic and crazy. Am I right?!

Run to this store… go to that place… pick this up… drop that off… get this done… and the list goes on and on. Figure out how you are going to handle the holidays for the first time during a pandemic...

The number of things you need to get done in a day (let alone a holiday week!) are INCREDIBLE.

It’s easy to feel drained, rushed, and pressured, and feel like you need to focus your attention on all the things you still HAVE to do.

The LAST thing you want to take the time to do is slow down and practice a little gratitude. But guess what?

Gratitude is one of the surest ways to protect yourself from getting pulled into the negative, stress-filled, and energy-draining hamster wheel.

It can literally help you short-circuit stress before it has a chance to set in.

Gratitude is NOT wearing rose-colored glasses and ignoring what you’ve got going on...

But it is taking intentional time to notice the GOOD things happening in our lives!
Picture
Did you know that on top of giving you an extra shot of the feel-good hormone serotonin, feeling gratitude actually can CHANGE your brain?

It helps strengthen the connection between the emotional and thinking parts of your brain – and people who have a gratitude practice are less likely to suffer from depression or anxiety.

They also are more optimistic in general, less angry, and sleep better! (Win, win, and WIN!)

Having a gratitude practice can even help lower your blood pressure and raise your heart-protective HDL cholesterol!

Pretty incredible!

So, how do you start a gratitude practice that actually feels AUTHENTIC to you and your life?

That’s easy. Start just like you would begin a workout routine... slowly.

Take a few minutes every day to think about (and even write down) a few things that you feel truly grateful for – and why you’re grateful for them.

This isn’t about going through the motions, but about actually FEELING them.

If you want to amp it up, place your hands over your heart as you think about what you’re grateful for. (I know this may sound weird, but try it before you knock it!)

Over a short period of time, you’ll notice that it becomes a lot easier, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a better day because of it.

Think of it as an experiment and give it a try – there are no negative side effects. :)

Lots of love,
Wilcox Wellness & Fitness
