​Did you know that although your brain isn't a muscle, it still needs exercise to stay sharp? Regular exercise can help train your brain to improve memory, focus, and creativity as you age. And the best part… Exercise can help fight off age-related dementia and Alzheimer's. Here are some fun ways to keep your brain fit and healthy:
  • Solve puzzles, play cards, or try memory games.
  • Get your heart rate up with cardio exercise and strength training.
  • Dive into new hobbies and languages, or take a class.
  • Engage all your senses by trying new activities that use sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
  • Challenge yourself with new experiences, like trying a new recipe, travel route, or visiting a new place.
  • Boost your focus with the "4 things" game – notice four things whenever you enter a new room or speak to someone.
Not only will exercising your brain be beneficial to your health, but it's also a fun way to keep things interesting.
My ‘brain exercise’ recently has been learning some Spanish - I am using the Duolingo app and I think it is helping. I am commiting to consistency and studying for 5-10 minute each night. What are you learning?

Recipe: Choco-chia Recovery Drink

I’m calling this a “recovery” drink because it’s packed with healthy ingredients that can help your body rebound after a workout …
… and it’s packed with antioxidants, healthy fats, potassium, fiber, and more.
But it’s so delicious you’ll want it for a snack anytime you’re in the mood for a frozen treat. 😋
Choco-chia Recovery Drink
(makes 1 serving)
  • 8 oz (240 ml) milk
  • ½ Tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 Tbsp cacao powder
  • 1-2 pitted dates (depending on size)
  • ½ frozen ripe banana
  • Handful of ice
  • 1 Tbsp peanut butter
  • ½ Tbsp flaxseed meal
Add the milk and chia seeds to a blender and let rest for 10 minutes so the chia seeds can start to gel. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend. For a thicker shake, add more ice or frozen banana.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Recipe: Sriracha Avocado-Egg Toast

This is one of my favorite recipes – it’s indulgent but still good for you – and even more importantly, it’s delicious!
TIP: It’s not just for breakfast - perfect for those hot summer nights when you don’t feel like cooking.
Sriracha Avocado-Egg Toast
(serves 1)
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 slice of sprouted grain bread
  • ¼ avocado, mashed
  • Sriracha sauce
  • 1 Tbsp hemp hearts (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Crack open the egg and put it in the pan and cook until it’s sunny side up.
While it’s cooking, place your slice of bread in a toaster.
Once the toast is ready, spread the mashed avocado on it. Top the toast with the egg and a drizzle of sriracha sauce. If using, sprinkle the hemp hearts on top. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.

Recipe: Pumpkin-Vanilla Pudding

This super healthy pumpkin pudding makes a delicious anytime snack. It’s also great for refueling after a workout.
You can make up a batch ahead of time so they are ready to go whenever you need a sweet(ish) treat – top with walnuts just before serving.
Pumpkin-Vanilla Pudding
(serves 1)
  • 6 oz (170 grams) nonfat Greek yogurt
  • ⅓ cup (80 grams) 100% pumpkin puree
  • Dash of cinnamon
  • Splash of vanilla
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey (to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp toasted chopped walnuts
Combine the yogurt, pumpkin, cinnamon, vanilla, and maple syrup in a small bowl and mix until well combined. Top with the walnuts. 😋

My grandfather always said: “You’ve got to make hay while the sun shines.”
I remember this on the days when Mike and I are up working on a project with each other at 4:30am because that is the only time we have to squeeze it in.
These words keep me going. The sun isn’t always shining, but when it is, you’ve got to be ready to make the hay.
