This week's movement of the week is a Kneeling Band Row. The goal for this week is to use the kneeling position to stabilize our knees and hips so that our obliques and lats do the majority of the work.
When we row with the lat and rotate the torso with the obliques we are mimicking a walking motion with the upper body. It is really important to continue to train this connection from the brain to the body. Take your time when moving with this one, it's the only way to really notice these muscles doing the majority of the work. Create tension in your legs by pushing forward through the knee & pulling back with the foot. Lock this into place then row and rotate. Do your very best to keep the elbow under the shoulder when performing the row. You want to do everything you can to not 'overpull' by bringing your elbow too far back. Make the most out of this seemingly simple movement!! Here is your checklist: 1. Create tension in the legs and elevate the torso creating your best posture. 2. Row so the elbow ends up under your shoulder or even slightly forward of the shoulder. 3. Rotate the torso using the obliques (not the arm or the hips) 4. Exhale as you row 5. Control the movement back to the starting position. Happy Training! Recently I was talking with a prospective client and he said to me "I know that I need to get healthy. I know what I need to do. I have a family history of health issues and I know that if I don't address some of these things now, I am going to end up with major health issues but I just can't seem to make it happen." Then, he asked me, " can you help motivate me?" To which I responded, "I can't. I can't motivate you to change your life. You are the one that needs to dig deep to find the leverage to change your life. I can tell how to do that - but you are the one that needs to do the deep work of making that happen."
I gave him the following free writing process: 1- I know that I should be taking better care of myself but I am not because I don't want to...... (start eating broccoli, go for a walk, give up my favorite cookies, etc.) 2 - If I continue down this path, this will happen..... (I won't be around to see my children get married, I won't be able to be active with my kids, I will stay in this grumpy uncomfortable state...) 3 - If I wanted to make a change this is the person that I would need to become... Then, just decide that you will show up as that person. Much easier said than done but crazy impactful. You really need to go through the process of finding the LEVERAGE, finding something that is meaningful to you, and finding something that is SO BIG that you will never go back to being the person you were before. You really need to get to the point where you are like, I can either sit here and eat these cookies and not see my children get married OR I can decide to commit to a little movement and nourish myself a little better and completely change every aspect of my life. We absolutely love seeing people be able to go for it in their life. To be able to go for a hike with their family and ENJOY it is what it is all about for us. It may seem like a small thing, but it is a HUGE reminder of the impact that committing to health and fitness does for people. We want to celebrate your wins too! What are you up to these days?
We are not in this business for the fitness. We are not in it to teach people to run faster (they do). We are not in it to help people lift heavier (they do). We are not in this business to help people train harder (they do). We are in this business because we want to help people live their very best life and we just happen to do it through health and fitness. It's not at all about the obstacles that you can overcome at the gym - it's about building the confidence in the gym so that you can accomplish everything else outside the gym.
