On Saturday we hosted the 4th annual Burpees for Turkeys event to help with hunger-relief in Maine. Food insecurity in Maine is a huge issue –more than 200,000 Mainers live with food insecurity - meaning they lack enough nutritious food to live a healthy life. 1 in 5 children in Maine live with food insecurity – and 1 in 3 children in Washington county live with hunger. This. Blows. My. Mind. How can it be possible that 20% of the children in our great state live with hunger? As a mother, this is devastating to me. I can not imagine not having the resources to feed my children. The thought of a child being hungry absolutely kills me. For a lot of families in our state, mothers are making the decision to keep the heat on or to feed their families. That must be an incredible struggle. Knowing that your child is hungry and having to make the decision to keep them warm, or filling their little bellies. There is good news… We have organizations like the Good Shepherd Food Bank whose mission is to end food insecurity in Maine. GSFB focuses not on just filling bellies but also on providing fresh nutritious food from local Maine farms. AND at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness we have an incredible community who can come together at events like this and raise money for hunger-relief. We are so proud to say that Saturday’s event raised over $7,500 - or enough to provide about 30,000 meals to Maine families who would have otherwise been hungry. YUP - you read that right. GSFB is able to leverage the money raised and stretch the dollars to do the most good. They can provide 4 meals with just a $1 donation. Just $5 per week feeds a hungry child for an entire week. AMAZING! Burpees for Turkeys started in 2015 and has raised over $29,000 to help with hunger relief in Maine. We are so thankful for the way that our community pulls together to create this kind of impact in our community. We are so thankful for the participants, for the people who donated so generously, and for organizations whose mission is to end hunger in Maine. We have already started the planning process for Burpees for Turkeys next year and we are excited to have even more of an impact to help end hunger in Maine. Gobble. Gobble.
